More Info United Nations Core Values: Integrity, Professionalism, Respect for Diversity Responsibilities Within limits of delegated authority, the Editorial and Desktop Publishing Assistant will be responsible for the following duties. * Produce camera-ready documents for reproduction by formatting documents in desktop publishing layout; this includes data input from audio or live dictation (minimum russian typing speed requirement is 54 wpm). Incorporate changes as marked by editors, translators and revisers, ensuring that the final version of the document conforms to, as the case may be (a) the draft translation as to contents, and/or (b) the original language manuscript as to format and typography, in accordance with existing editorial guidelines. * Perform proof-reading functions ensuring that changes have been incorporated as marked in the draft copy and alerting the responsible authority if obvious errors or discrepancies are found in the translated text. * Participate, as a member of a team, in the production of parliamentary and miscellaneous documentation, supplements and sales publications, by preparing desktop publishing layout of the final product in Russian for reproduction in hard copy and electronic dissemination. * Compile submitted corrections and edit documents in Russian, according to required format. * Perform other related work as required. Competencies * Professionalism - Familiarity with UN structure and editorial practices. Proficiency in Russian. * Planning and Organizing - Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to establish priorities and to plan, coordinate and monitor own work plan. * Commitment to continuous learning - Initiative and willingness to learn new skills and flexibility to changes in assignment. * Technological Awareness - Good knowledge of desktop publishing and database inputting and research and verification of United Nations terminology on the Intranet. Knowledge of all aspects of desktop publishing work, including all software applications used in the unit. * Communication - Ability to write in a clear and concise manner and to communicate effectively orally. * Teamwork - Good interpersonal skills; ability to work in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
QUALIFICATIONS Education High school or equivalent diploma. Must have passed UN specialized tests (i.e., grammar, verbatim, formatting and speed typing) in Russian. Work Experience Progressively responsible experience with the methods and procedures for desktop publishing documentation (draft typing, copy editing, proof-reading, and typographical layout of documentation). Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For these posts, candidates must have Russian as their primary language. Oral and written proficiency in Russian, with strong knowledge of spelling and grammar. Ability to communicate effectively in English desirable. Knowledge of other official UN languages (Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) desirable. Other Skills MINIMUM TYPING SPEED REQUIREMENT IS 54wpm. Familiarity with the documents production system. Other: Necessity to rotate in day and night shifts, and availability for overtime and on-call assignments, depending on the needs of the service.
