Description: Job Title: Director, Finance Requisition #: NY4262 Area of Interest: Accounting/Finance Business Division: Trade Wkly Std Hours: 35 Days Per Week: Std Work Week (Mon - Fri) Position Type: Full-Time Regular City: New York - SoHo State: New York Description: Overview: This is a challenging opportunity for a financial leader to play a key role in supporting the continued growth of Scholastics Trade Book Group division. Scholastic is the worlds largest publisher and distributor of childrens books. Scholastic creates quality educational and entertaining materials and products for use in school and at home, including childrens books, textbooks, magazines, technology-based products, teacher materials, television programming, videos and toys. Scholastics Trade division is a leader in creating, developing, marketing and selling childrens books to multiple retail channels. The position reports to the Vice President, Trade Finance, who is responsible for managing all aspects of the Trade financial function and works closely with the Trade Groups President and senior leadership. Responsibilities * Assist VP in day-to-day management of all Trade financial functions, including forecasting, reporting, budgeting, and cost management * Provide management and oversight of monthly close process; address high-level issues with corporate accounting group * Address financial queries from sales, marketing, operations and editorial groups; provide ongoing financial support to these internal customers and their leadership * Manage internal reporting requirements for Trade division and corporate finance detailing divisions performance; manage related financial system issues as needed * Monitor and report on division expenses; lead on-going efforts to improve internal controls and reduce costs * Drive budget and forecasting processes * Serve as liaison to royalty accounting, editorial and marketing in forecasting, reviewing, and addressing issues related to royalty payments * Analyze and investigate opportunities to improve Trades profitability, cash flow and operational efficiency, including review of revenue drivers, manufacturing costs, distribution costs, overheads, and assets * Evaluate products, business strategies, acquisitions, and sales and marketing initiatives in conjunction with the VP * Manage staff, providing leadership, financial guidance and accounting expertise * Manage special projects and perform ad-hoc analysis as necessary Requirements: Qualifications: * 10 to 15+ years experience working in a finance capacity * Publishing experience strongly desired; CPA a plus * Superior financial, analytic and spreadsheet skills, particularly in the creation and manipulation of models; strong accounting knowledge; detail oriented * Strong project management skills, including ability to marshal resources, navigate company, and drive projects to completion with limited guidance * Ability to swiftly learn, utilize and manage financial systems; knowledge of JDE and Hyperion/Essbase a plus * Experience in developing and writing reports and presentations for senior management * Excellent interpersonal skills, including strong communication and writing skills; ability to relate to a wide variety of audiences; comfort in independently building relationships both within and outside the finance organization * Demonstrated experience in managing and leading a high-performing staff * Willingness to roll up sleeves and get involved in order to bring daily tasks to completion * Desire to work in a challenging and fast-paced environment Specific Tasks * Work with VP on Major Operational/Profitability Improvement Issues * Enhancement of financial and reporting systems to support Trade needs * Streamlining operating issues * NSO unit reporting vs. Trade reporting * Revised Coop System * Asset tracking (prepub, advances, inventory, receivables) * Post-mortem P&Ls * Improved internal management reporting * Drive all forecasting requirements * For multiple business units (Harry Potter, Core, Foreign Rights, Chicken House). Includes working with VP of Demand Planning and VP of Sales * Assessment of return reserves vs. actual returns * Asset/Balance Sheet/Cash Flow forecasts * NSO forecasts * Review of expense forecasts * Intangible assets * Review of system uploads * Management and oversight of Close Process * Analysis of gross margin components in terms of return reserves, variance explanations and key drivers * Creation of P&Ls for Harry Potter vs. Core * Separation/allocation of financials into frontlist and backlist for Core and HP * Preparation of commentary * Preparation of budget slides * Address high-level issues with Secaucus accounting * Work with HarperCollins A/R support as needed * Oversight of expense drivers * Address/model financial queries from marketing/sales/operations/editorial * Promotional requests from marketing * Meet comp inquiries from sales * Sales opportunities * Sales incentive plans * Attend and provide input to sales/marketing/operations meetings * Oversight of internal reporting * Daily Sales * Expense reporting * Financial reporting * Oversight of Royalty Issues (tasks performed by financial analysts) * License forecasting * Trouble-shooting royalty inquiries * Review of semi-annual royalty payments * Foreign Rights * Manage Trade Budget Process NOTE:Please include salary requirements in your cover letter.
