Description: Director, Book Publishing & Production Services Jul 29, 2008 New York, New York Return to Search Results|Send job to a friend Description: The College Board, a national educational organization, is searching for aDirector, Book Publishing & Production Serviceswho will manage the book publishing function for all College Board trade and educational publications. The Director will lead all production operations to ensure that all publications and collateral are produced timely, effectively, and at a high level of quality.

The College Board’s Book Publishing & Production Services group is acollaborative book publishing function that aligns publishing plans and strategies with the organization’s goals and priorities in the context of industry trends, and leverages the production function to promote organization-wide efficiencies and best practices.

Key responsibilities include the following: · Lead the publishing function activities and actively coach all team members in meeting all project responsibilities including initiating planning, executing, monitoring and closing projects, with an emphasis on using established project management best practices. · Facilitate the development and maintenance of text designs and publishing plans in collaboration with content leads and the Project Manager, Book Publishing. · Lead a collaborative, organization-wide book publishing strategy project to include all produced publications and books; Develop short- and long-term production strategy planning. · Ensure each project is executed according to documented publishing and cross-functional processes and appropriately staffed, escalating issues to management. Implement formal change management processes as project requirements change. · Collect, analyze, and report project schedule, resource, financial, and performance metrics data for departmental operational reporting, examining and reporting trends and variation in schedule, cost, quality, and delivery. Contribute to departmental resource capacity planning, ensuring effective and efficient deployment of resources across multiple projects. Track and analyze production data to capture savings and recommend best practices. · Establish and communicate procedures for the production of College Board books. · Work with program sponsors to identify, analyze, and develop publishing plans and strategies that align with the organization’s goals and priorities; assist program sponsors with developing and implementing budgets and long-term strategic plans for annual publications. · Oversee the establishment of preferred vendor relationships and ensure that Vendor Managers have the information necessary to establish these relationships. Assist the Vendor Managers in negotiating the terms of print vendor contracts, as necessary. · Evaluate print vendor capabilities, and make recommendations to expand the preferred vendor list as needed to support the work required by Publication Services. · Ensure program sponsors follow established procedures and adhere to schedules, and understand industry best practices to ensure that Production Services staff are able to deliver quality products on time. · Work with Distributor and program sponsors to expand College Board presence in target markets, such as targeting specific channels of distribution and customers. · Focus on developing staff and setting goals and expectations. Ensure that staff have the support and tools necessary to achieve their goals, and that staff work collaboratively with all sponsors to meet their publishing needs. Qualifications Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree plus 7 years of experience in production and publishing that includes end-to-end media neutral digital workflow; and operating knowledge of content and media production practices and tools including content management systems, authoring templates for text and media, project tracking systems, XML editing tools, desktop publishing and automated composition systems. Other requirements include the following:

· Management of function and of staff · Vendor management experience · Comprehensive knowledge of the publishing industry. · Ability to analyze data and make recommendations on how to print more cost effectively and operate more efficiently as a business unit. · Strong project management skills and experience in creating, implementing and maintaining project management plans. · Experience working with internal and external customers with the ability to foster positive, long-term relationships. · Highly organized and self-directed experience leading multiple projects and people simultaneously. · Experience leading cross-functional project teams, managing work assignments, and providing direction as needed. · Maintain current and relevant knowledge of industry developments and new technologies. · Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. · Ability to generate strategic insights. · Benefits
