General Description: Functional Title: SBDC Business Advisor

Background: The LaGuardia Small Business Development Center opened its doors in October 2001 in response to the needs of small businesses after the 9/11 Disaster. Since then the center has continued to provide professional and in-depth one-on-one counseling and community trainings for existing and start-up businesses in as many languages as English, Spanish, Korean and 3 dialectes of Chinese.

Areas of Business Advising: ? How to start a business ? Insurance ? Business planning ? Marketing ? Legal structures ? Preparing for & accessing financing ? Financial planning ? Credit building & repair ? Permits & licensing ? Business expansion ? International trade

Job Description: ? Provides quality one-on-one advising to a varied and complex range of clientele and demonstrates a wide breadth of knowledge in many areas of business development. Many clients can be serviced on a short-term basis while other clients require long-term counseling depending upon the clients level of expertise or the sophistication of the venture. Sufficient organizational skills are critical in maintaining a high level of activity while adapting to the time sensitive nature of business making. ? Implements and/or participates in training sessions sponsored by the SBDC and provides follow-up services as necessary to attendees. Sessions are in many forms including long-term classroom situations, single and multi-day conferences where relevant topics are discussed in open forums and in other public situations. Other Duties: ? Conducting an SBDC sponsored training event involves careful planning. Substantial advance work is performed to a) identify a topic that effectively addresses an identified need in the business community, b) secure the services of appropriate experts in the field when necessary, c) select time, date and location for the event, d)be available to provide follow-on one-on-one counseling to attendees when requested and e) gather feedback from attendees to evaluate the quality of the event and to help identify topics for future events. ? Establishing a comprehensive network of professional contacts for referral purposes is an important component of an advisors responsibilities. The credibility of the advisor and the program can be jeopardized if a referral is made to an individual or organization that is ill suited to meet the clients needs. New contacts are established on an on-going basis so that resources can be utilized in response to an ever-changing business climate. ? Gathers written feedback from clients who have received assistance for the purposes of program refinement and promotional purposes. ? Performs clearinghouse services gathering information from clients and other interested individuals and refers individuals to outside providers when helpful. ? Provides leadership and contributes to initiatives to promote the Center, conducts applied research and coordinates partnering networks and organizations as well as student assistants.Salary:$40,000 - $45,000 annual salary based on experience and education. Health and other benefits are also included. Core Competencies/Qualifications: ? The position requires no less than two years experience in private sector business or related public technical assistance environment. ? Preferred areas of experience include small business financing, financial analysis, marketing, business law and/or economic and community development. ? The position prefers at least a Bachelors Degree. ? Microsoft Word and Excel required. ? Excellent presentation and pedagogical skills. ? Strong writing ability. ? Fluency in one or more of the following languages is preferred: Spanish, Korean or Chinese. Position will remain open until filled.
