General Description: BEGIN Managed Programs/ME-PLUS Mid-Manhattan

OPERATIONAL HOURS: Evenings hours and Saturdays Monday-Off, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday -12pm to 8pm. Friday 9am to 4pm, and Saturday 9 am to 3pm

(BMP)E-PLUS Program is an evening and weekend model for low-income working adults and former Public Assistance recipients who have gained employment. Employment Plus provides services to help participants retain their current jobs and improve their prospects for upward mobility. Students participate in a comprehensive program model of education, job preparedness and counseling support. BEGIN Work Study Employment Plus offers Basic Education English language instruction integrated with the students? career interests. for all literacy levels up to and including GED. Participants increase speaking, reading, writing, math and critical thinking skills through work-based and employment-focused curricula integrated with the students job interests. ESOL Basic Education students acquire marketable skills for employment: they demonstrate improvement in their basic literacy skills and self-image and are able to articulate their abilities with confidence. Other Duties: Under the direct supervision of the Education Manager, the ESOL instructor will:

• Prepare lessons and enhancement activities to address skill development in reading, and writing. and math. • Become familiar with available print resources and develop curriculum and lessons in a work-based context. • In conjunction with site computer lab instructor, augment and classroom curriculum through technology-based instruction. Explore site resources for computer assisted learning and develop utilizing available educational software, the Internet and word processing programs. • Participate in staff development conferences, workshops, seminars, institutes, etc. offered by the BEGIN Staff Development Unit as well as by other organizations such as the Literacy Assistance Center. Liaison and share effective strategies and methodologies with other BEGIN program sites. Attend site-based staff meetings, program-wide committee meetings and other instructional meetings. Participate in teacher-led workshops on professional topics, sharing knowledge gained from professional practice. • Participate in citywide and program wide events such as the Adult Basic Education Conference and the BEGIN EXPO. • Assess student progress and maintain documentation of progress, demonstrating academic improvement, social growth and job readiness and including student history. Incorporate alternative assessment instruments to evaluate progress. Submit periodically updated theme- based contextualized curriculum for each class with outlines including topics and materials. • Complete roster and student attendance forms. Participate in conferences with larger Employment Plus staff on student attendance and progress. Provide support documentation for conciliation conferences when needed. Conduct attendance conferences with students. • Research and recommend educational materials appropriate for the target population for purchase.Salary:$38,000. Core Competencies/Qualifications: BA minimum required with a Masters preferred in education. Must have classroom experience including lesson development. Prior experience working with adult literacy population in an educational setting strongly preferred. Excellent writing and oral communication skills required. Excellent interpersonal and team skills needed. Experience in administering State approved ESOL assessment tools. Must be computer literate.
