General Description: The Director is responsible for managing the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP), providing support services for the faculty to advance the Colleges research agenda and encouraging a culture of grant seeking at Lehman College. The Director reports to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs (Provost) and works closely with the Vice Presidents and Academic Deans to ensure institutional research priorities are met, to increase the number and quality of sponsored program applications and to maintain an efficient internal review/approval process that meets faculty and ORSP needs.
Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Review of applications will begin July 21, 2008. Other Duties: Faculty: .Meet individually with new faculty members to discuss grant opportunities and expectations .Prepare ORSP New Faculty Information Kit annually (paper and electronic) .Provide faculty with a basic level of understanding in matters related to grant reassigned time, fellowships/tenure clock considerations, human subject and animal care approvals, patent and intellectual property considerations and conflict of interest issues .Help foster collaboration among departments, center and institutes and individual faculty members .Review foreign and domestic subcontracts and ensure sponsor, College and Research Foundation policies are followed. .Ensure that academic, financial and legal matters are addressed during the application preparation and review process .Manage an efficient internal review process which responds to administration and faculty needs .Assist faculty and administrators with proposal development .Create budgets consistent with College and Agency policies .Negotiate awards with federal, state, city and private agencies .Review electronic funding opportunities and assist faculty in using
Grants.gov, COS and FC Search systems. Research Foundation: .Serve as Campus Liaison to the Research Foundation of The City University of New York CUNY (RF) (FY 07 award volume of approximately $318M) .Signatory for grant applications .Day to day grants management .Work with RF and College officials in gathering data to develop the Colleges federal indirect cost rate .Oversee the management of Lehmans RF grants and contracts (Award Volume for FY 07 was approximately $20M). Research, Compliance and Grants Administration .Have knowledge of and ability to keep current with software, communications and database options for electronic grant administration .Serve as resource person for the Chair of the Lehman College IRB .Serve, ex officio, on Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and the Institutional Biosafety Committee .Ensure that ORSP Databases generate accurate reports and that needed data are available for the Provost, Deans and faculty .Upgrade ORSP web site as central information point for pre- and post- award grant administration and sponsored programs topics .Recruit and supervise professional staff members, support staff, student aides and train ORSP staff to keep office procedures, services and databases current .Supervise regulatory compliance of project funds and work with faculty to prepare financial statements for post-award reports .Prepare income analysis, distribution and released time reports .Project goals and targets for the Colleges grant activities and generate year-end reports .Monitor special programs and Colleges released time, facilities and administration and interest income accounts .Serve on the CUNY Council of Grants Officers .Attend National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA) meetings .Other duties and special projects as assigned by the ProvostSalary:$95,000-$115,000 Core Competencies/Qualifications: The ideal candidate will be able to: .Work independently and lead the ORSP team. .Have familiarity with RF CUNY systems, policies and procedures .Possess expert knowledge of the field of sponsored programs or research administration, government (NSF, NIH, DOD, etc) and private foundation program requirements and practices .Possess experience and familiarity with NSF Fastlane, NIH ERA commons and
Grants.gov .Explain legal requirements and institutional policy regarding human subject research, laboratory animal protocols and bio-safety procedures .Possess expert knowledge of key office technology and Microsoft Office, Pure Edge and Adobe for electronic application submission .Relate the College mission to funding goals and opportunities .Communicate and work effectively with senior staff, associates and internal and external constituents .Explain complex concepts to professional college staff, college officials, RF Administrators .Listen to and respond to the concerns or ideas of others .Resolve sponsor concerns and make timely and effective decisions (Be able to think on ones feet!) .Be familiar with public policy review, data collection, statistical evaluation of data, and strategies for conveying results to others
A Masters Degree and no fewer than six years of related experience are required. Applicants should show progressively more responsible sponsored programs positions; and the ability and willingness to comply with all RF policies and procedures.
The Director must be able to deal with multiple issues simultaneously under the pressure of constant deadlines, have a sense of humor and have a commitment to public education and the Bronx and its neighboring communities. Position will remain open until filled.
