General Description: The Graduate Center is the doctorate granting institution of The City University of New York, nationally unique for its consortium of 1700 faculty. A recent ranking of humanities programs ranked The Graduate Centers programs fourth in the country behind Harvard, Princeton and Yale. Ideally located at 34th Street and Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, The Graduate Centers campus is housed in a nine-story landmark building that was redesigned to meet the specific needs of a 21st century institution of advanced learning.
The Graduate Center is in receipt of a naming endowment gift for its Art Gallery, now the Amie and Tony James Gallery, prominently located on the ground floor facing Fifth Avenue, enabling us to develop a new mission for the Gallery. We envision the James Art Gallery as a venue for curators throughout the City, both independent curators and those associated with cultural and community based institutions, to experiment with topical ideas and concepts. We seek a Director to translate this vision into a vibrant and exciting artistic venue. Other Duties: Reporting to the President of The Graduate Center, the Director will:
? Develop exhibition guidelines and a process for soliciting and evaluating proposals. ? Communicate the mission of the James Art Gallery with appropriate constituencies and develop collaborations to advance it. ? Plan annual exhibition schedules and budgets; develop relevant reports. ? Curate exhibitions as appropriate. ? Teach a course in the Art History Department as appropriate. ? Help recruit and work closely with the Gallery Advisory Board and an Exhibitions Committee. ? Play a leading role in fundraising and public relations with the President and the Vice President for Institututional Advancement. ? Hire and supervise gallery Assistants, Interns and StaffSalary:Commensurate with experience and qualifications Core Competencies/Qualifications: Bachelors degree in Art History, Fine Arts and at least eight (8) years of experience in museum or gallery management required; an advanced degree and knowledge of contemporary art are preferred; Enthusiasm for the gallery mission and the ability to raise funds, create and sustain programs and work collaboratively with others are also required. Excellent organization and communication skills preferred. Position will remain open until filled.
