The New York State program, one of the largest chapters within the organization in program size and fundraising, is key to the success of the campaign. The New York metropolitan area has a wealth of individuals with major gift potential ($250,000 to $10 million and higher) that has yet to be fully tapped. The challenge for the Deputy Director, Major Gifts will be to build on the programs success and capitalize on this potential to significantly increase private funds raised in support of state and global conservation priorities by leading the major gifts team and personally soliciting and closing 7- and 8-figure gifts. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The Deputy Director, Major Gifts works under the supervision and in close partnership with the Director of Philanthropy for New York, and as the leader of the New York Major Gifts team, to design, implement and assess effective strategies for identified major and principal gifts donors and prospects (i.e., those with the capacity to make a $500,000 or greater gift over three years or a six-figure deferred gift). These fundraising efforts support state and global conservation priorities and are aimed at raising a significant portion of the approximately $25 million annual New York fundraising goal. The Deputy Director is personally responsible for the cultivation and solicitation of a portfolio of approximately 50 major and principal gift donors and prospects. S/he has the ability discuss assets proficiently and to listen for opportunities for gifts of assets or other non-cash gifts, such as planned gifts and trade lands. S/he involves and engages the New York State Executive Director, TNCs Chief Conservation Officer, and other TNC leadership staff, along with appropriate partners in conservation programs and at the Worldwide Office, involving them in strategy development and solicitations, keeping them apprised of interactions, and collaborating to ensure maximum fundraising effectiveness. S/he also works directly with key members of the New York State Board of Trustees and other high-level volunteers including business and conservation leaders from the New York City area and around the state. The Deputy Director, Major Gifts must be able to work in a highly complex, organization and in collaboration with philanthropy staff at the Worldwide Office, in other key states and Conservancy-wide, as well as with state-based scientists and conservation experts and staff across a dispersed and complex, global organization. S/he and the major gifts team work closely with and are supported by a team of marketing professionals, gift planning experts and other resources. To be successful candidates must be curious and self-motivated to learn about domestic and global conservation. Finally, the Deputy Director understands and complies with all TNC gift-related policies and procedures, and ensures ethical compliance, as defined by the Association for Fundraising Professionals. KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS: ? Bachelors and 8 ? 10 years? related work experience. Major gifts fundraising experience a must. ? Extensive management experience including ability to motivate, lead, set objectives and manage performance of senior fundraisers. Ability to foster an environment of creativity and professional growth. ? Successful experience in managing and tracking multiple prospects and donors. ? Knowledge of current trends in charitable giving, particularly in the areas of capital campaigns, major gifts and planned giving. Working knowledge or ability to learn basics of charitable gift planning. ? Successful experience in asking for and closing seven-figure major gifts and building and maintaining long-term relationships with individual fundraising constituents. ? Ability to use existing technology to achieve desired results. COMPLEXITY/PROBLEM SOLVING: ? Ability to design, implement, and direct fundraising initiatives, including individualized cultivation, solicitation and recognition strategies. ? Ability to work in a high-visibility, fast-paced and demanding environment. ? Proven ability to negotiate complex, high profile or sensitive agreements. ? Strong communication and presentation skills; ability to persuasively convey the mission of TNC to diverse groups including donors, corporate executives, board members and others who are important to the organizations overall prosperity. ? Ability to work with and communicate with a wide range of people the public, state program leadership, influential donors, prospects and others. ? Ability to educate and inform prospective and existing donors about appropriate giving vehicles. ? Ability to build constructive and effective relationships with major gifts team, and a wide-range of philanthropy staff. ? Ability to work effectively in high-tension situations and maintain composure under pressure. WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT: ? Work requires only minor physical exertion and/or physical strain.
