Description: Counselor (FT) Department:Talent Search Location:Bronx Issue Date:Tuesday, August 26, 2008 PVN Number:RIS-787

General Description: Two (2) Positions Available. The Talent Search Program is designed to identify youth with the potential for education at the post- secondary level. Encourage qualified individuals to complete middle/ secondary schools; and enroll in a postsecondary insitution of their choice. The program will provide individual/group counseling, advisement and technical assistance from grade six (6) through twelve (12) in career exploration; education planning; college entrance examination preparation; admission and financial aid procedures; tutoring; cultural and motivational development and guidance on secondary school re-entry or entry to other programs. Other Duties: Talent Search counselors will assist in recruiting eligible participants. Responsible for assessing and documenting academic potential, financial eligibility and first-generation eligible participants. Work with target schools counselors in coordinating project activities. Refer ineligible students to appropriate alternate agencies. Assess participants tutorial needs and recommend tutorial services. Maintain particpants file according in proposed guidelines. Assist participants and implement college/cultural field trips, financial aid workshops for students and parents. Perform other duties as required to achieve program goals and objectives.Salary:$26,000 Core Competencies/Qualifications: Bachelors Degree required (Masters preferred) in counseling or related areas. *Must have at least one year experience counseling disadvantage youth; *Knowledge of fianancial aid and college procedures; *Ability to write clear and concise narrative reports; *Working knowledge of Spanish is desired for one of the counseling positions. Position will remain open until filled.
