General Description: COUNSELOR Counselor reports directly to the Director of Youth Programs. General Description: 1. Case Management/Counseling of students 2. Identifying entry behaviors and characteristics of program participants I 3. Conduct regular student/counselor conferences to determine students development and design activities needed 4. Identifying, ordering and supervising the administration of interest inventories, vocational skills aptitude examinations and TABE examinations 5. Maintain student files 6. Meet with students to fill out an Individual Service Strategy (ISS) 7. Conduct life skill, special issues and group counseling workshops 8. Provide follow-up counseling services 9. Prepare services and/or referral agencies for participants who indicate a need for referral 10. Assist with the implementation of the recruitment process and the retention of students 11. Providing oversight of students progress and attendance 12. Develop a relationship with parents 13. Set up parent/counselor conferences 14. Participate in Parent/Teacher conferences 15. Assist in the development, scheduling and supervision of workshop leaders 16. Planning and implementing Internship, Job Shadowing and Community Service sites Other Duties: 1. Assisting with the preparation of reports 2. Coordinating student entry into the summer program 3. Preparing recruitment materials 4. Acting as liaison between the high schools and LaGuardiaSalary:$32,000-$35,000 Core Competencies/Qualifications: Bachelors Degree and 2-3 years experience in progressively responsible postions working with youth. Ability to work independently as well as cooperatively.
1. Plans and implements the orientation of students and parents new to the program and follows up on students adjustment to school. 2. Plans, develops, supervises, and interprets the necessary testing programs for the program. 3. Acts as a liaison with the various offices and agencies within the community that provide specialized professional assistance to students and their parents, and serves as a coordinator of referrals to those offices and agencies. 4. Demonstrates the ability to use appropriate counseling techniques in both an individual setting and group setting for bptimal developmental growth. 5. Develops positive relationships with students, parents, staff, and administration. 6. Adheres to policy and ethical practice in matters of confidentiality. 7. Assumes such other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the director or coordinator 8. Knowledge of basic interview principles 9. Thorough knowledge of office and record keeping practices and procedures 10. Thorough knowledge of community resources 11. Skill in the operation of modern office machines such as personal computer, facsimile, calculator and copiers 12. Interpersonal skills necessary to deal courteously and effectively with other employees and the public 13. Ability to assemble information, compose and prepare accurate records and reports with a high degree of accuracy and ability to answer questions from records 14. Ability to display tact, emotional stability and patience while dealing with distressed individuals and to make immediate decisions 15. in difficult and/or emergency situations 16. Ability to comprehend, process and apply both verbal and written skills appropriate to the job 17.
