General Description: The City University of New York Black Male Initiative (CUNY BMI), a University-wide program coordinated by the CUNY Office of Academic Affairs, seeks an Associate Director. Among other duties, the Associate Director will work closely with the CUNY BMI Director in the coordination and development of this important University-wide initiative. Additionally, the Associate Director will assist in the creation of an institute located on the campus of The City College of The City University of New York (CCNY) that is dedicated to examining issues and topics related to social and educational equity for students from populations that are severely underrepresented in higher education, particularly African American males.
Position Description and Duties: The CUNY BMI Associate Director will assist in the coordination of a University-wide program that is dedicated to increasing the enrollment, retention and graduation rates of students from populations that are underrepresented in higher education. Responsibilities include: ? Monitoring the progress of campus-based BMI projects dedicated to the continued development of effective diversity recruitment strategies; raising retention and graduation rates and increasing the number of educators from groups that are severely underrepresented as teachers in the New York City public school system, particularly African American males; ? Determining if projects funded by CUNY BMI are implementing best practices models and strategies established by the central program such as mentorship programs with peer advisor and/or faculty/administrator components; ? Assisting in the development of assessment tools and keeping track of the progress and engagement of students participating in CUNY BMI funded projects as well as their academic achievement levels and retention and graduation rates; ? Maintaining close contact with the administrators of campus- based BMI funded projects through telephone calls, email correspondence and monthly meetings and providing technical assistance to the campus-based projects as needed; ? Coordinating evaluation of campus project outcomes that are required to produce demonstrable results; ? Assisting in the organization of regularly scheduled events and activities such as the CUNY BMI Distinguished Speaker Series and the CUNY BMI Annual Conference; ? Assisting in the organization and facilitation of monthly meetings of administrators and faculty members implementing CUNY BMI funded campus based projects; ? Assisting in writing regular reports as required by public and private funding sources; ? Attending meetings and events sponsored by CUNY BMI. Other Duties: ? Assisting in the development of a funding-raising plan for CUNY BMI; ? Identifying funding sources and assisting in the writing of grant proposals; ? Developing communications tools for CUNY BMI including a newsletter as well as brochures and flyers to draw attention to the initiative, its resources and activities; ? Assisting in the creation of an institute at CCNY dedicated to the study and promotion of social and educational equity for students from populations that are severely underrepresented in higher education, particularly African American males; ? Assisting in the development of a program and research agenda for the proposed institute; ? Developing relationships with faculty and staff members to build a wider constituency throughout the University in support of CUNY BMIs goals and objectives.Salary:$55,000-68,000 Core Competencies/Qualifications: Bachelorsdegree in a related field from an accredited institution, and no fewer than three (3) years of related experience. Strong preference will be given to applications with a Masters degree or a professional degree in a relevant area such as a J.D., M.B.A., M.P.A. or M.P.P. Candidates should have a demonstrable knowledge of and interest in civil rights, education, law, public policy, student development and/or student leadership theories and practices and must evince a strong interest in and commitment to promoting opportunity and equity in higher education. In particular, CUNY BMI would like to identify an individual who is interested in bridging the gap between theory and practice for the benefit of students from populations that are severely underrepresented in higher education. Therefore, the ideal candidate will have experience working in higher education and/or a nonprofit organization that advocates on behalf of students from populations that are underrepresented in higher education. Additionally, he or she will be a strategic thinker with excellent financial management ability, a record of fundraising success, and knowledge of local, state and federal government. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal and written skills. Finally, he or she will have a demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies and to manage competing priorities. Position will remain open until filled.
