It publishes approximately 85 trade titles a year, Kaplan Publishing is a unit of Kaplan, Inc., a subsidiary of the Washington Post Company (NYSE: WPO). The trade division of Kaplan Publishing seeks a creative and enthusiastic Associate Editor with 3+ years editorial experience in book publishing to oversee revised editions and 4-6 existing trade series, to assist in the development and editing of select individual trade titles, as well as other work as assigned. Responsibilities include: - Acquire, negotiate, develop, and edit 20-25 book series book projects annually. - Prepare books for transmittal to the production department. - Develop and maintain relationships with authors and agents. - Support senior staff with administrative tasks and workload. - Prepare promotional materials (i.e. book jacket copy, tip sheets) and other creative support for marketing, publicity, and sales team. Requirements: - BA or BS required; strong English language and grammar skills required. - 3-5+ years editorial experience in book publishing. - Experience with some non-fiction, non-textbook acquisitions is required. - Excellent written and verbal communication skills. - Practical knowledge of the editorial process, including manuscript development. - Strict adherence to schedules and deadlines. - Strong research and organizational skills. - Proven ability to multitask; able to juggle several projects at once. - Extremely detail-oriented and focused on precision. - Demonstrated success in generating new ideas, as well as the ability to effectively present them. - Solutions-based work ethic and ability to interact with sales, marketing, and creative teams with guidance from editorial director.
