Position Responsibilities include: * Working closely with Boston based Creative Director on creating new processes to facilitate projects coming to and from New York. * Supervising day-to-day activities of own Jr. Design Staff (a Designer and Assistant Designer) in addition to freelance book designers. * Designing, managing and overseeing the design of picture books, YA Novels, paperback reissues; some franchise projects, and non-fiction. * Tracking all design projects. Coordinating projects with editors and design staff, Creative Director and Managing Editor. Helping to schedule and monitor various stages of art and production related issues for book projects. Responsible for color correcting and overseeing color correction for all stages of proof and packaging projects to go out to the printer. * Working with Jr. Design Staff in increasing design proficiency and expertise. Overseeing book cover and interior designs of Jr. Staff and select freelance book designers; Providing cover and interior design supervision for all phases from concept to finished books. * Bringing in new design and illustration talent. Requirements • 5-7 years experience in Children’s Book design and/or related publishing related experience. Management experience required. • Person must have the ability to manage and art direct own projects as well manage, oversee and art direct staff members, freelance illustrators and designers. • Person must have a keen eye for design and must be organized; efficient; and have excellent communication skills. • This position will be part of the new Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Children’s Design Group. The Art Director will be primarily responsible for handling the Harcourt Children’s list. Skills Desired:
