Description: Title: Sr. Staff Engineer - Radiation Survivability Location: NJ, Clifton Req Number: itti-00008194 Position Description: ITT is seeking a Radiation Survivability Engineer for the Space Systems Division. The successful candidate will be located in Clifton (NJ). This is a Senior Staff position providing advanced engineering as a technical expert in solving highly complex problems in radiation survivability engineering to support spaceflight programs. All activities are associated with radiation survivability of DOD, civilian and commercial space equipment that are launched into a variety of orbits and mission durations. Work will encompass a wide range of sophisticated (cross-discipline) engineering problem resolutions. Specific responsibilities for electronic equipment include: - Implement systems and satellite level radiation design concepts - Model natural and weapons effect environments Provide recommendations for all levels of shielding. - Implement radiation design for weapons effects -Performing TD shielding analysis including Total Ionizing Dose and ELDRS effects, SEE analysis, Displacement Damage analysis; -Establishing end of life parametric data for use in worst case analysis; Lead radiation experiment design and test programs -Establishing requirements for procurement specifications. May function as organization spokesperson on advanced projects or programs. Exercises considerable latitude in determining methods and approach to engineering and job responsibilities. Works under consultative direction toward long range goals and objectives. May provide leadership responsibility for satellite programs with assigned engineers as required. General Summary and Basic Function: Serves as a functional expert in the area of engineering expertise and provides advanced engineering services in solving highly complex problems in area of specialization or product or design development to a wide range of products, projects or programs to the Space Systems Divisions Engineering business unit.
Scope and Principal Duties: Provides advanced technical engineering expertise on complex technical problems in a broad field of engineering, research and development for highly complex and technical space-based aerospace products. Uses the application of engineering standards, principles, theories, concepts and techniques which are highly innovative and ingenious. Designs, develops, tests and verifies complex engineering in electrical, mechanical, optical, software, systems, and/or hardware components. Work will encompass a wide range of sophisticated (cross-discipline) engineering problem resolutions. The role involves design and development engineering assignments related to products and systems including the engineering of new products or updates to existing products.
Job Specifications and Work Performed: Creates, develops and designs complex and difficult mechanisms, systems and equipment which require a broad knowledge of several fields and an extensive knowledge of own specialty. Leads and Directs design teams to determine the qualification and manufacturability of new technologies. May function as organization spokesperson on advanced projects or programs as the engineering expert or authority. Determines and pursues courses of action necessary to obtain desired results. May lead R&D project or program team. Develops and maintains plans, schedules and budgets for assigned projects. Prepares for periodic management reviews as required to give management visibility on the status and progress of assigned projects.
Prepares theoretical studies of involved technical subjects that find wide application to design problems or that are required where previous methods and techniques have not produced satisfactory results. Studies the basic design ideas and methods of approach proposed by other engineering personnel: consults available technical data, analyzes previous design, utilizes specialized knowledge, and proposes improvements or modifications to the basic design ideas and layouts which would be more effective and involve less risk. Confers with Sr. Management, engineering personnel and customer representatives to assure proper consideration of customer requirements. Collaborates with other engineers in order to assure proper compromise on the best theoretical design in the interest of basic and practical considerations. Develops methods and techniques to be used for standardization of approach to specific design problems. Prepares technical descriptions of basic designs, and engineering estimates for inclusion in bids and proposals or presentations to customers. Represents the organization as a prime technical contact on contracts, projects or products. Analyzes engineering plans and projects to establish operating data and conducts experimental tests; analyzes proposals and related technical data to develop design alternatives. Plans design layouts in order to study the operation, select major components, assure conformance to functional and operating requirements, and determine the optimum location and arrangement from an engineering, manufacturing and maintainability standpoint. Investigates problem areas and initiates corrective measures relating to the interpretation of technical data and the functioning of equipment during prototype construction or manufacturing phases and field installation. Prepares progress reports relating to assignments as required. Confers with vendors to discuss physical and performance characteristics of proposed parts, components, and equipment for application to assigned equipment. Prepares specifications and design parameters for equipment to be designed and/or built by subcontractors. Maintains technical competence and state-of-the-art expertise in areas of technical specialization. This is accomplished by reviewing technical publications and books, attending technical seminars and Company training, and taking academic courses. Maintains engineering notebooks in department approved repository for work products in accordance with established policy and procedures. Keeps abreast of the state-of-the-art by reading technical journals and publications.

Exercises considerable latitude in determining methods and approach to engineering and job responsibilities. Works under consultative direction toward long range goals and objectives.

Financial Responsibilities: Spending authority or authorization is limited to the jobs scope and or project responsibilities. May be responsible for capital budgets and purchasing for their area.
Contact Responsibility (internal or external) Interacts with external customers at all levels and interacts with Sr. Management, and internal personnel. Is a representative of the organization as a prime technical contact to multiple departments and site locations across the company. Experience Requirements: Requires B.S. degree, preferably in Engineering or in a technical area of science and research with 12-20 years work experience or a MS degree with 10+ years work experience, or a PhD with 8+ years work experience in radiation design. A BSEE/MSEE or BS/MS Physics with experience in Radiation Survivability Engineering for space applications is desired. Knowledge of reliability design is an advantage. Candidate must have proficiency in circuit design, signal analysis, systems concepts and electromagnetic effects. Experience with using modeling tools such as Space RadiationTM, CREME and/or CEPHX software preferred. Microsoft Office applications such as Excel, Outlook and Word is necessary. PSPICE and MATHCAD knowledge a plus. Working Condition: General office environment, laboratory, manufacturing area, or research areas requiring the ability to stand or site for long periods of time. Personal protective equipment maybe required to be used. Position requires the ability to work with computers and lift up to 25 pounds. Security Clearance: This position may require the passing of both a background investigation and polygraph to achieve a variety of compartmented national security clearances.
