Description: Under general supervision, responsible for the overall planning and coordination of production in the Tube Mill and Extrusion Departments. Facilitates product quality and on-time delivery of customer orders while maintaining a safe work environment and positive employee relations. Essential Functions: * Actively supervises production during 1stshift operations. Oversees supervision of 2ndshift operations. * Schedules, reviews, and approves work schedules and workloads of subordinates. Direct subordinates are: Extrusion Supervisor, 2ndShift Supervisor, Hourly Bargained Work Force, and indirect subordinate: Plant Production Planner. Coordinates orientation and cross-training of employees. Reviews and evaluates employee performance. * Oversees management of departmental sales orders. Ensures appropriate levels of raw materials, billet stock, lubricants, wooden box inventory, and general supplies are maintained and open orders for all are reviewed on a regular basis. Ensures that orders for additional materials and supplies are placed in conjunction with vendor lead-times and logistic considerations. * Ensures departmental operation is consistent with all company policies & procedures, State and Federal legal compliance (i.e. OSHA, EPA, EEOC). * Ensures that effective systems are in place to review departmental lead times, and that accurate lead-time information is communicated to the Sales Department. * Leads the department’s continuous improvement program. Identifies and recommends methods to improve productivity, efficiency, quality, and safety. Analyzes and resolves production problems, where applicable. Provides technical support to employees. Identifies problems and communicates maintenance requirements. * Interfaces with QA, Wire Mill and Sales on new product and process development, with Engineering on the purchase/installation of new equipment and modifications to existing equipment. * Designs new extrusion and draw tooling. Reviews, orders, approves, & modifies existing tooling designs for Tube Mill and Extrusion as required. * Conducts daily safety meetings; serves on the Plant Safety Committee; ensures a clean, safe work environment. * Responsible for developing and coaching direct reports. Responsible for ensuring all direct reports follow Phelps Dodge Corporation policies, procedures and guidelines. Responsible for all disciplinary action of employees when appropriate. * Must be able to work weekends when required. * Performs other duties as assigned. Knowledge and Experience: * High School Diploma required. Engineering degree is preferred. * Seven years supervisory experience in manufacturing environment required. * Skill in planning, organizing and self direction required. * Computer expertise with Microsoft Office Suite required; Ellipse and PDOE helpful. * Excellent communication skills, oral and written. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public. * Ability to recognize hazards, develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions. Lead by example in safe practices and procedures. * Bilingual (English and Spanish or Portuguese) beneficial. Criteria/Conditions: * Work is in a mine or manufacturing plant setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, toxic chemicals, explosives, fumes or airborne particles. * While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, work on elevated platforms, talk, hear and see. * Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects (up to 30 pounds) during the course of the workday. * Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, or manufacturing plant environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required.
