Weird request from buyer of my domain

Author: joewo
Date: Jan 31, 2008 19:53

So I have a domain name that someone wants to buy. I am going to go
through Escrow.com in order to make sure I am not ripped off. Once
the deal goes through it will be transferred to the domain buyer and
done.

The weird part comes with the buyer wanting me to point the domain to
a blank page that they own so they can track the hits to the domain.
He wants to see that no foregn hits occurr. Does this make sense? It
just seemed like an odd request. Can something weird happen here or
is this SOP? On top of that he is offering me a $1000 non refundable
deposit via paypal to do this.

Thanks

Need to prevent one or two pages from being cached

Author: Warmbells

Hi,

I run a site for an animal rescue charity, a couple of the pages have
the content changed 2 or 3 times a week, I need to be able to:-

a. stop search engines from caching the page.

b. stop the browser from caching the page.

What's the best method for either or both of the above.

This has come about because one of the pages lists animals that are in
need of homes, I have some text on the page stating that at the time the
visitor is viewing the page the actual animals needing homes might have
changed and to contact the sanctuary.

Last week a lady visited the sanctuary to give a home to an animal she
had seen on the site and had traveled a number of miles to get there.
When she asked about the animal she was told it had been homed two weeks
earlier. She got very annoyed and complained that we should keep the
site more up to date, in fact that particular page had been updated only
the day before she says she viewed it.

Thanks
Gerald

Web.com / Interland terrible support experience!

Author: Denny
Date: Jan 31, 2008 07:40

At midnight last night, I was doing updates to a website on web.com
and ran out of transaction log space trying to add a new field to a
database table. Because the update was half installed at that point,
it caused the website to be down.

Upon calling tech support, I reached a girl in the Phillipines. We
spent a half hour on the phone, then she escalated the problem to
their Database department. The only estimate that she could give me
regarding the resolution was "sometime tomorrow". When asked if their
was a supervisor or anyone else I could talk to since the site was
down, she said no, they wouldn't be able to help.

This morning, I got an email from web.com. They had closed the
ticket. Their resolution was that I needed to call Sales and purchase
more space.

I know that we don't represent much business to them, but it's hard to
believe that their priority was to sell me more space (which was only
needed for less than a minute) rather than to help me get the website
back up and going.

What are the copyright ramifications of having an IFrame on my page linked
to another site's content, e.g., to show the other site's video?

Does Joe sell his van with "SomeBusiness" painted on the side? If it's
listed as an asset of the business, and the deed of sale refers to
that list, then it goes with it. If it's listed as a separate item,
then it's sold separately.

Also you don't "own" domains, you merely rent their registration to
you for a period. If you claim to sell something that you don't
actually own, then that clause of the contract may become invalid. You
need to check the wording carefully here - sell all your rights to
that registration, don't claim to be selling the actual domain.

You need their permission to do so (the content is still their
copyright, they just let you use it anyway).

You're unlikely to need to ask about this beforehand. If they care,
they'll make this clear in the overall conditions, or in the feed
itself. If it's an advertised public RSS feed, it's "reasonable"
behaviour to assume an implicit licence to use this on your site.

Both. Copyright and licensing aren't quite the same thing.

read the Creative Commons website, or Wikipedia's authoring
guidelines, for some good background on copyright.

Use Apache as a web server (most hosts do).

read the config docs for Apache, probably the section around .htaccess
and "Directory Index"

Then set things up so that it's like this:
Directory Index index.html index.htm
special_foo_for_this_one_directory.html

Remember you can use an ordered list here, not just one page name.

Don't duplicate content!

If you want root access, then you will have to have a dedicated
server.
