Yesterday's post on Coding Horror got me wondering how Google deals with
the "www." subdomain these days. The prevailing wisdom is that Google
considers www.example.com and example.com as essentially two separate
sites; one should redirect users from www.example.com to example.com, or
vice-versa, so that a site's incoming links will not be split between
the two representations, as that would harm the site's search engine
rank.
But is this still true? I ask because Google's webmaster tools has an
option to set either www.example.com or example.com as a site's
canonical domain for search results. This would seem to imply that
Google now treats the two forms as conceptually the same site (with,
presumably although not necessarily, unified page ranks), at least as
far as search results go.
Any thoughts?

Firstly let me say that I dont obsess abou buildingt pagerank as I
know that there are other ways to drive traffic to my sites.
Nevertheless it is an indication of something and it would be nice to
have an accurate figure. Hence this post. Recently I have been trying
to establish the pagerank of 3 pages and I get different scores from
different online sites and from the google toolbar depending on which
computer I am on:-
http://www.americymru.com is either 0, 2 or 4
http://americymru.blogspot.com is either 0 or 3
http://www.whynotportland.org is either 1 or 2
Can anyone tell me what the true pagerank of these pages is and how I
can establish these figures in future without getting different
results?
Best Reuards

The internet is a wonderful invention and used in a responsible manor
it brings joy to billions of people, sadly there are some people in

Off topic? Or relevant? The jury is out....
Too often people use the wrong words.
A common and nauseating howler encountered is the use of "barter"
(exchange of goods, trade by exchange, for example a sheep for a pig)
when people mean "haggle" (wrangle over a price)..
Within web sites, the word "sophisticated" is used where the writer
actually means "elegant".
Sophisticated comes from the Greek Sophistos, hence someone who use
clever, but deceitful arguments.
Elegant, however, infers cleverness through ingenuity, and at the same
time simplicity and taste. As contrasted with vulgar which implies
common, coarse and uneducated - most people mean when "not vulgar"
when they use the term "sophisticated", though they perhaps do not
realise it.
It is too depressing to describe when I receive arguments from people
supported by inaccurate dictionary definitions, though I quite
understand how people might be misled by such sophisticated works of
fiction....
