Terror Group Profiles: Jamaat al Muslimeen:
An extremist Muslim group with tentacles in politics and organized
crime, Jamaat al Muslimeen burst onto the international scene in 1990
when it stormed the Trinidadian Parliament and took the island
nation's prime minister hostage.
The attempted coup set off six days of violent rioting and looting in
Trinidad's Port of Spain, brought to an end only by the surrender of
Jamaat al Muslimeen's leadership to Trinidad and Tobago authorities.
It was an auspicious introduction to a group inspired by Pan-African
black power ideology and intent on bringing greater power to the
island's black Muslim minority through violence and criminal
enterprise. Yesterday, authorities said two of the men implicated in a
plot to bomb fuel tanks at John F. Kennedy International Airport were
associates of Jamaat and reached out to its senior leadership for
"operational expertise, means and, most importantly, their blessing."
