IC urged to decline entertaining LTTE bogus reports

The SL Defence sources vehemently decline pro-LTTE efforts to entertain
a forged accusation of a civilian catastrophe in Mannar, seeking
International sympathy to smother the worsening ground situation in the
North and East against the terror outfit.

It is believed that the civilians claimed injured were those forcibly
held under the LTTE captivity, used for fatigue work. Many are believed
to be fishery folks, forced to provide labour in the barren stretch of
land. Dozens of women and children are also believed to be further
confined in petite spaces with worst living conditions of any nature.

Military officials state that the precision air strikes on Tuesday(02),
has caused grave damages to the LTTE and these sudden misinformation
campaigns are used to conceal the true facts of its existing child
soldiering farms in Mannar.

Thus, the International community must urge the LTTE to facilitate
humanitarian organisations and independent media sources from gaining
verified claim from the area.

Women and children were believed held captive in human farms, while the
males provided labour through hardships in the military construction
sites of the LTTE.

Meantime, the SL Government urged the Co-Chairs to take necessary steps
against the SLMM's sudden decision, to remove seven of its offices in
the North and East, slackening the terror outfit to continue its
freelance crimes against humanity and forcible conscription of child
soldiers to its ranks.

A government official said that it is imperative that both the LTTE and
the SLMM take all measures to fulfil their obligations under
International law to protect civilians in the Internally Disturbed
areas. The official further said that "We have too often seen the SLMM
agents fall short in its duties."

"The security forces were flexible and pragmatic in all of its actions
and the dedication to resolve this internal disturbance situation in the
country is greater than ever".

"Pro-terrorist agents under the LTTE payroll in Colombo are plummeting
with harsh and unfair critics against the security forces. These
allegations over the years have proven to be false with lack of
accountability and ethical lapses" he further added.

Meantime, Bishop Rayappu Joseph's reactions harping sympathy for a
terrorist outfit has raised unsolved doubts within the general public.
When, the Tigers wantonly shelled the holiest Roman Catholic shrine in
Sri Lanka, namely, the Madhu Church on 20th November 1999, killing 38
refugees and injuring 60, Bishop Rayappu Joseph's reaction was not to
accuse the Tigers of cold blooded murder and the desecration of that
shrine, but to attack the Army personnel for having been there [Indian
Express 21.11.99] and to accuse the Army of using the refugees as "human
shields [BBC News 22.11.99].

Meanwhile, the United Nations calls once more for a cessation of
hostilities between the SL government and the LTTE outfit and resumption
of peace talks and recalls the responsibility of all parties to the
conflict to protect civilians and uphold international human rights and
humanitarian law.
