6-11 Dangerous Prey

First airing was Jan 22, 2001.

The story starts out with an Amazon running through some woods, looking over her shoulder
occasionally. It is Marga, the queen. She trips and her hand goes into a small bear trap. Someone
dressed in black walks up to her. She escapes and runs away but he throws a triangle shaped
Chakram-weapon and hits her on the back of the leg. She tells him to kill her but he says she will
deliver a message before she dies.

Xena and Gabrielle ride into a deserted camp. They dismount and look around. Xena yells out that
they've come in peace. Varia comes out and wants to know what Xena is doing there. Xena says Marga
invited them. Another Amazon says that their warriors keep ending up missing in the Sacred Canyon.
Marga went to find out why. Varia doesn't want Xena's help. The other Amazon says Marga told them
not to go after her. Varia is impatient and wants to go, and she does.

Xena goes after her after but finds Marga first. She tells Xena to protect Varia and she gives Xena
her necklace. Varia runs up as Marga dies. Xena sees a triangular cut on her shoulder. And words
are carved into her skin. Xena reads it and it is a challenge to the Amazons.

They take Marga back to camp and Xena tells Gabrielle she died from internal injuries. She was
meant to crawl back to camp before she died. Varia is gone again and Xena tells Gabrielle to stay
with the Amazons and she goes after her.

It's from "The Most Dangerous Game" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0023238/).
It's been said that every adventure show that's on long enough eventually
does a "The Most Dangerous Game" episode..

I'm not sure I agree with this. I think Callisto was very well
developed in just one ep. (and Joxer got established in the same ep).
She went on to be the best villian in the show but that first ep would
have been fine as a stand alone ep. Najara was also very well done in
her first ep. I think the second ep got added on because she was so
good first one. Alti fits your criteria of a two-part ep but that
actress was good enough to establish the character in one ep. Caesar
was established in one ep (although since he's a historical figure he
might not count. ) Lao Ma was also two eps but I would argue that
her character was firmly established in the first part. Marcus,
Draco, Ephiny... all established in one stand alone episode.

LOL! Sorry for the long list. I've just gotten into identifying the
characters I liked after just one ep. ;)
