2-13 The Quest

(Or Destiny, Part 2)

First air date Feb 3, 1997

The episode starts out with Gabrielle waking up from a nightmare. Next to
her is a very fancy sarcophagus with Xena's body in it. She says she has the
same nightmare every night and every morning wishes it was a dream.

Four or five thugs show up and want Xena's body for possible bounty.
Gabrielle fights them off with her staff. The leader gets up and Iolaus
shows up and beats him up. He realizes Xena is dead.

Gabrielle says she want to hate Xena for leaving her. Iolaus asks what
Gabrielle would want to say to her. She says her life was empty before Xena
came along, she's learned lessons, and she loves Xena. Iolaus tells her she
just did. He leaves to give the bad news to Hercules.

Gabrielle has Argo pulling the sarcophagus. They are in a forest and Amazons
drop from the trees. One of them is Ephiny. She tells Gabrielle that Queen
Melosa was killed in a challenge from Velasca. Velasca steps up and says she
is now the queen.

They go back to the Amazon village.

I wondered if what Gabrielle was (perhaps rather too subtly ) doing
was offering her a choice - the knife or the mask. Velasca selected the
knife (i.e. chose violence), thereby missing her chance at the mask. But
I could be wrong. :)

Agreed! I would have like to have seen her in more episodes, but when you
think about it, there really wasn't all that much Amazon involvement again
until the second half of season 6 and the "future" Amazons (or whatever
we'll be calling them after the 25 year sleep). After A Necessary Evil, we
only have one episode next season (Maternal Instincts - the opening of
Bitter Suite hardly counts) and one in season 4 (Endgame - which I won't say
anything about now). From here on out, it is only Amarice, the northern
Amazons, the "past" Amazons or the future Amazons - none of whom appealed to
me like the "originals" did.

Now that just makes me sad. :(

This part never made sense to me. Xena DIED. It's not like in FIN 2 where
she actually had a choice. So why does Gabrielle react as if Xena made a
conscious choice to "leave her?" I know, some will say because she told
Nicklios to let her die. But, if all one had to do to not die is to desire
continued life, I think this planet would be a lot more crowded than it
already is!

Considering how little he was in the episode and how little he contributed,
I wonder why they even bothered? And why he got such a prominent "special
guest star" credit?

No ALMOST about it! And was it no Xena who put Autolycus's hand on
Gabrielle's butt?
