2-03 The Giant Killer

First air date - Oct 14, 1996

The episode opens with Xena and Gabrielle walking through a bunch of giant
bones. It is a giant graveyard and Xena tells Gabrielle that the giants
don't bury their dead. [ I guess they just let them rot until only the bones
are left - what a smell!!] Xena is there to meet a friend from 10 years
ago. [Xena must have had an EXCITING life ten years ago - everything
happened then!!]

The friend arrives and it is a giant. Gabrielle excuses herself so
Xena and Friend can have some alone time. But she is accosted by some bad
looking guys. They are about to attack her when Xena shows up and everyone
fights. One of the captives is named David. Gabrielle doesn't do so good in
the fight, she gets knocked down pretty easily.

It turns out that the guys Xena was fighting, the Philistines, are
the ones who hired the giant, Goliath, to defeat a bunch of poachers, the
Israelites. [Of course Xena knows Goliath - she knows EVERYONE! They fought
side by side - TEN years ago, against another giant named Gareth, who killed
Goliath's wife and daughter.]

Another fine Ep account.

I want to note that this episode, a very first-seasony,
semi-Hercules episode that's more about the myth they're fracturing
than it is about Xena & Gabrielle, nevertheless gives rise to a sequel
of sorts, later this season.

In a little while, some of the iconic episodes of the whole series
will be coming up and I hope Mr. Milligan will still be at it because I
want to see a new discussion of this episode's follow-on, `A Day In The
Life`. In that one, we see Xena settling the score with Goliath's
wife's killer, a plot point in this episode that's left dangling.

Many people put ADITL in the box as their favorite episode ever.
For that reason, `A Giant Killer` should get a gentlewoman's C, just
for being the trigger for the later ep.

The actor who played Goliath is on another episode. This time he's
stands at 5'10".
I forgot what name of the episode was? It was when Xena and Gabrielle
was on a boat with Autolycaus..going down to the oceans bottom.

I found this......

Poteidaia, an ancient city located in northeast Greece on the narrowest
point of the Pallene peninsula, Chalcidice, was a Corinthian colony
around 600 BC, but joined the Delian League. In 432 BC, Poteidaia
revolted against Athens with Corinthian help, providing one of the
incitements to the Peloponnesian War. In 430 or 429, Athens recaptured
the city. In 357 BC, Philip II of Macedon, father of Alexander the
Great, took Poteidaia and may have destroyed it in the ensuing war.
Rebuilt by Cassander, the city was renamed Cassandreia.

I'm not a big fan of this episode. Not sure why... it's not a bad
story. In fact, I like the twist of having Xena be a friend of
Goliath. But, for me, they told the story too well and I ended up
liking Goliath a lot and I was sad that he had to die.

I also didn't like having Gabrielle chasing after David. They could
have skipped that part. LOL. Although the rest of her role in this ep
was pretty good. I liked the stealing food part.

I think this is a big part of why I don't like the ep much. I don't
like the Hercules type stories. And this one revolves more around
David and Goliath then Xena and Gabrielle.

Season 2 rocks!

I mentioned sometime during S1 how much the 10 yrs ago thing drove me
nuts and someone from the board (can't remember who) said that
since Xena and Gabrielle travelled together for so long, maybe
everything didn't happen at the same time in the past, just 10 years
from the point in time where Xena told the story.... guess she had a
10 yr non-disclosure contract.

Anyway, I've decided to adopt this mode of thinking to get around the
ten year thing and I'm trying to guess how much time passes during each
season. I've decided that S1 took 2 1/2 years. Here's my...
