A source tells TrekMovie that more ship interiors were created for this
film than any other Trek film before. And unlike previous Trek films
there is a minimal amount of ‘redressing’ being used. The USS Kelvin and
the USS Enterprise are totally unique. All this means that Star Trek
will truly be (as co-writer Bob Orci said in one interview) ‘a starship
adventure.’
More details here about the U.S.S. Kelvin:

I wonder. It seems like ST:TMP would be way up there, too. It gave us
a lot of Enterprise sets. The Bridge, Transporter Room, Sickbay,
generic corridor, Officer's Lounge, Kirk's Quarters, Ilia's Quarters
(redress of Kirk's), two Recreation Rooms (one where Kirk gives his
"this is what we're up against" speech and one where Decker tries to
get through to Ilia, probably a redress of the same set but they look
very different) the Engineering set, and the airlock/spacesuit set
(probably a redress of engineering). TMP also gave us the Klingon ship
(Bridge), Spacedock Ops Center, Epsilon 9 (probably a redress of
Spacedock Ops), the Shuttlepod, and technically, the V'Ger/Voyager set
is still a ship.
Trek XI must have a made a LOT of sets to top TMP.

Great. A time ship. Yet another time travel story. Hooray.
Do they not have anyone in Hollywood who can write a Trek story without
time travel?

"Spock’s Time Ship
"As reported before, the Star Trek film involves time travel and elder
Spock (Leonard Nimoy) traveling through time. However (contrary to
previous rumors about the Guardian of Forever) Spock uses a Vulcan
ship specifically built for time travel. The ship is small and has a
crew of one (Spock). The film will feature the bridge and also the
ship’s ‘time core.’ It isn’t known what the name of the ship is, and
it may be that the ship has no name."
Psssst! Doctor Who already did this!
::groans:: Everything I see and here just makes me have even less
hope. And I didn't even have much to begin with.

Well, that the movie uses time travel has been pretty obvious for a
while now. Pretty much as soon as Nimoy said his role was not just a
cameo. That ruled out the "Spock talking to someone about his life's
adventures" movie bookending idea (a'la "Titanic" or DS9's "The
Visitor".)

They really, really, REALLY should have used the Guardian of Forever.
Pay Ellison whatever he wants.

At least the Guardian of Forever is an established deus ex machina.
New theory, ala JJ: Vulcans are really Time Lords. And uh... there's
a polar bear involved, too. Maybe even some archaic script language
about an ancient weapon that... uh...

You would first have to find one of the very few people in Hollyweird
who has even one braincell, then you have to work out which of them
actually has talent and creativity ... if you're REALLY REALLY REALLY
lucky you might end up with one person, but they're probably currently
employed in a studio cafeteria or cleaning staff. :-\

All they have to do is use one of the hundreds of books written by good
authors. I have a bookcase full of good trek books that would make good
movies.

I wouldn't go that far. Most of the Pocket novels are garbage.

Sure.
And as soon as they stop having to make movies with any of the original
cast, they can write such stories.
The problem is that too many Trek fans demand movies that feature some
of the original cast. But they're so old that they can only play
characters in retirement. The only two ways I can think of to resolve
this dilemma are flashbacks to the aging characters' pasts (as in the
movie "Titanic"), or time travel to the aging characters' pasts.
