I have a problem with impulse engines.
Ships that only have impulse engines are not supposed to reach faster-
than-light speeds. Right?
In the earlier episodes involving impulse engines, I never recall it
mentioned that a ship with impulse engines could not reach faster-than-
light speeds.
Can anyone clear this up?
Thank you.

No. It is in fact a mystery. There are a lot of guesses, but no canon
answers.

I don't know myself, though the speed they're limping away in ST:II is
a pretty good indicator that impulse isn't faster-than-light. Still,
it may be that you CAN break the light barrier with impulse engines,
but the amount of time you'd need to 'run up to speed' as it were is
considerably more.
Good luck in finding a more definitive answer!

If you mean when they're trying to get away from the Genesis
device...I don't even think Impulse Engines were functional. It looks
like Sulu's 'best possible speed' is trying to get away on thruster
jets or something.

::grins:: You might be right. Still, though, impulse strikes me as
being something much slower than the 'go to warp' speed.

I just thought of something.
I was wondering how the Romulans could have maintained their star
empire with impulse-drive ships only.
The answer is they did not, they did have ships with warp drive!
I suspect they used a "carrier" strategy, in which a warp-driven
vessel was used to carry other ships which did not. The other ships
had such things as enhanced weaponry or unique technology (like the
cloaking device).
It is as good a guess as any.
Did anyone notice the Romulan boo-boo when they first showd up in the
Enterprise series? The Romulan ships had cloaking devices, even
though they were not supposed to have them before the time of Kirk.
Talk about bloopers!!!
