Economists: Prepare for US monetary reversal
(Xinhua)
Updated: 2008-07-01 18:54
BEIJING -- Economists are warning policy makers in China to prepare for
a reversal in US monetary policy to tightening during the second half of
2008.
Market analysts said they expected the US Federal Reserve Board to raise
interest rates in the second half of the year, as inflation risks began
to outweigh recession fears in the world's largest economy.
An expected strengthening of the US dollar following such a rate hike
would divert speculative funds ("hot money") from emerging markets to
the United States, increase the burden on countries with heavy foreign
debts, and cause a regional economic crisis, He Fan, an economist at the
Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), said in a report released on
Tuesday.
China, with hundreds of billions of US dollars in "hot money" that had
already poured into the country, should closely watch the adjustment of
US monetary policy and take much stricter measures to monitor capital
flows in the meantime, said He.

He loves China, believes in peace
By Lin Shujuan
China Daily Staff Writer
Updated: 2008-06-25 12:59
XINING: He has been in love with China for 37 years. And he has seen its
rapid growth during the past three decades.
Pride was added to John L. Holden's double happiness Tuesday, when he
became one of the two foreigners to carry the Olympic torch in Qinghai
province.
The familiar way the 56-year-old American greeted the people in Xining
did not raise a doubt that he was visiting the city for the first time.
His fluent Chinese and amiable nature gave the feeling he was meeting
old friends.
The chairman of Shaklee (China), a California-based natural nutrition
firm set up in 1954, loved introducing himself as He Liqiang, his
Chinese name.
Called a zhongguotong (Chinese expert) by his friends and associates,
Holden has lived in China since 1974, shuttling from Beijing to Hong
Kong to Taipei.

Russians Against South Park
Filed under: TV News > Legal Matters
http://img.perezhilton.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/southpark.gif
The Russians aren't too excited with the US cartoon South Park airing
in their country.
Prosecutors in Russia want the cartoon banned! They're even calling
the series "extremist" and have already received various viewer
complaints.
Now? All of a sudden???
South Park has been around forevs!!
Valentina Titova, a rep for the prosecutors, says they decided to file
a motion after an episode aired on the Moscow television station 2×2
back in January. She claims the cartoon "bore signs of extremist
activity."
Titova added, "In accordance with the conclusions made by experts from
the court investigations committee, a claim has been filed against 2×2
for its broadcast of an episode of South Park."

Maybe the Russians aren't worried about retribution for the invasion
of Georgia, but they better watch out for the wrath of Matt and Trey
if they're going to make inflammatory comments about South Park and
Mr. Hankey.
Vic
Moscow prosecutors began legal proceedings aimed at the cartoon series
South Park today in a bid to kill Kenny in Russia.
Prosecutors took action against the 2x2 television channel for
broadcasting an episode of the animated comedy show that featured
Christmas songs including a medley duet performed by Santa Claus and
Jesus Christ.
The Basmanny regional prosecutors office in Moscow has announced that
the programme "bore signs of extremist activity".
The episode in question called Mr Hankey’s Christmas Classics was
aired in Moscow in January. It shows a number of regular and guest
characters including Satan, Adolf Hitler and an anthropomorphised
human faeces called Mr Hankey performing in a Christmas variety show.
An accompanying CD is available to buy.

Inner Mongolia undertakes Great Wall repair
(Xinhua)
Updated: 2008-05-11 09:43
BEIJING -- The most extensive preservation project for the "Great Wall"
has been launched by the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
"A survey of Ming dynasty (1368-1662 AD) Great Wall is in full swing,
and repair has started for Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC) Great Wall," said
Mingri, deputy director of the regional cultural department.
Inner Mongolia has the longest section of the Great Wall among all
provinces. The Wall built in different historical periods runs more than
20,000 kilometers in Inner Mongolia, Mingri said.
The project focuses on protecting the original architecture, including
some reinforcement work. It will take two to three years, he said. The
major work this year is to finish repairs on the Qin-era sections of the
Wall and investigate what needs to be done on the Han Dynasty sections,
he said.
The cost is estimated at 100 million yuan (about 14.3 million US
dollars), of which more than 5 million yuan has already been invested,
according to Mingri.
