Smackdown is a horrible show if you like wrestling. They were smart to
get rid of it. As for licensing deals thats exactly right, with Gossip
Girl theres more to be made. With serials like Supernatural and
Smallville. Theres the magazines, box sets, etc..Plus the potential
for spin-offs on both shows cannot be ignored.
I think Gossip Girl is based on a popular book series(i dont watch it
but I am sure I heard that) you've got a base audience right there
that already buys the product. They buy the books watch the show,
marketing show-based products is a breeze.
I understand there focus group. Its a viable high sales group. They
spend a lot of expendable cash. Its an easy market to target towards.
Supernatural is not however a male based focus, it stars Jared
Padelicki (formerly from the gilmore girls) and Jensen Ackles(my wifes
dream guy.lol) The show can draw in a cross-market. It doesn't hurt
that the show has a killer soundtrack and solid writing with a 5
season cut off. They already have sowed the seeds for possible spin-
offs.
The ideal style show for a channel like CW isnt *gag 90210, its a
series from my native land. Degrassi: Next Generation, it a much more
intelligent well written series that would appeal to a huge base. And
would hit the teen market that the family channel has cornered as well
as there target market and the 80's nostalgia crowd.
