Time to Count the Doughnuts
By Sam Roberts and Griffin Palmer
If your eyes glazed over at revelations that Hillary Rodham Clinton
used $1,200 from her campaign war chest to splurge on Dunkin' Donuts
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/22/us/politics/22clinton.html , that
expense turns out to be just the icing on the cake.
An hourlong investigation by The New York Times has found, in the 10
months ending in January, that the Clinton campaign reported
expenditures of $1,884.83 at Dunkin' Donuts in New Hampshire and
Florida (which she won) and in Virginia (which she didn't), and
$504.02 at Krispy Kreme stores in South Carolina (which she also
lost). So much for dollars to doughnuts. Or just desserts.
Her bakery bills totaled $5,950.53 (at Dunkin' prices, about 12,000
doughnuts). Andrea Rowell, assistant manager at the Dunkin' Donuts in
Concord, N.H., where the campaign spent $273 one day last month, said
the workers ordered coffee, too. "It wasn't just doughnuts," she said.
