I was listening to a CD of Mike Post's tv themes from 1999.
"NYPD Blue: The Best of Mike Post"
Strangely, it has a big picture of James Garner on it and a small
picture of Tom Selleck, but no pictures from the title tv show.
Mike Post had nothing to do with this. The music is arranged, performed,
and conducted by others. It sounds something like the arrangements heard
on tv, but not quite. On collections like these, I always hope for a
longer version of the tv music, since the original arrangements are
always heavily cut for time.
Alas, Rockford Files was arranged from the early season theme, the
choppy transition between themes smoothed a bit. The tv version always
sounded like a bit of a compromise made in the sound editing booth that
wouldn't get fixed for several seasons. The harmonica bits are
synthesized, sheesh.
Quantum Leap and White Shadow sounded the least like the tv version.
On the plus side, the synthesized title track "NYPD Blue" theme is terrific.
It was arranged and performed by Mark Ayers who had nothing to do with
the other tracks.
A lot of his later themes really sound a lot like "Hunter".

Even more ironic given their sordid personal association over the
years.

I agree. In fact, Fagnumb was one of those shows I could watch back in
its day, but can't tolerate today. I couldn't even get through the
pilot episode back when Columbia House first offered the title on VHS.
I really expected to enjoy it too, but didn't anticipate the effects
of losing all respect for an actor.
All he does thoughout the whole silly exercise is abuse his employers
property, chase after his blond Navy buddy (Dwight Whipple from
"Hawaiian Headache"), shun females throwing themselves at him
(including the ones that also resided on Robin's estate), and consult
with asian cocaine kingins in Rick's clown suit disco lounge.
Thankfully, I managed to get my subscription cancelled before the next
$24.94 shipment arrived, and you know how tough that can be if you've
ever dealt with CH.
