Maverick: "Brasada Spur"

Author: Adam H. Kerman
Date: May 17, 2007 13:18

Comic Maverick starring Bart. Directed by Paul Henreid, movie character
actor (Victor Lazlo "Casablanca") who became a very prolific television
director starting in the mid '50's. Teleplay John Tucker Battle, story
Palmer Thompson, never heard of either.

Julie Adams (forever known as the star of Creature from the Black Lagoon)
was the love interest/antagonist. Hope Summers was also in the cast. Both
are still acting!

Bart comes to a prosperous town in a ranching area to play in a high stakes
poker game, and as always, must con his way in. For no particular reason, he
pretends to be a colonel (no one asks him about his war experience). He
learns that socialite Belle Morgan, wealthy widow and queen of the town, is
the person to get him into the game. She owns the hotel and has stakes in
various important businesses and surrounds herself with gatekeepers. The
episode features a hotel with the latest technology, speaking tubes, making
for some sort of switchboard arrangement and intercom.

She indulges her pet Yorkie. Maverick swipes the dog by eating the same meal
that the dog has, thinking he'll entice the dog into his room. Doesn't work,
but Bart gets the dog to invetigate a sound, then grabs him. Bart pretends
to have rescued the toy from a bull mastiff, getting bitten in the process.

Randolph Scott was not around. He liked chaps.

"I never felt Lee Strasberg could act, and I fail to see how someone
who can't act can teach acting."

He was right, but that statement is why Henreid was denigrated by a
jewish Hollywood, and blacklisted in the 50's.
