Happy Birthday - Mike Post!

Date: Sep 29, 2007 04:00

***

Today Mike Post turns 63. (He and I share the same birthday
day and year).

Mike, of course, is the composer of the theme from the Rockford
Files. Actually he is quite a prolific composer of TV themes with a
hand in composing pretty much all the great police/crime shows from
the 70s, 80s, and 90s including Hilll Street Blues, NYPD Blue, Magnum
PI, Hunter, Great American Hero, Quantum Leap and others. (Loved all
those shows, except Magnum). He has several albums including NYPD
Blue: Best of Mike Post that includes the theme from Rockford Files.
One of his early pieces of work was doing the musical arrangement for
the Mason Williams hit Classical Gas. One of the all time great
guitar classics - incredible sound. Maybe before most of your times,
but it still gets played on the radio.

His collaborator, Pete Carpenter, passed away in the 90s. A Pete
Carpenter Fellowship was established that gives young artists an
opportunity to work directly with MIke Post for a few weeks at his
studio in LA.

Happy birthday Mike and thanks for all the great music!

Happy Birthday, Mike Post, and to you, George! I hope you both have a
great one.

I wasn\'t aware that Mike Post had a hand in the Mason Williams tune,
Classical Gas. Interesting.

Mike Post a Hundred Years from Now?

Will anyone remember or ever listen to any of those dumb jingles a hundred
years from now? Besides getting rich, what did Mike Post do except whore out
his talent to the lowest common denominator??

I have no respect for the guy, and nobody remembers him even now except for
the slobs at TV Land who have to constantly promote the ancient crap on
their channel.

Ancient crap? Now that\'s pretty funny. You post that on a board
dedicated to a show that is 30+ years old? Priceless,....

And if it was (as you consider it to be), ancient crap, why are the
numb-nuts in Hollywierd always trying to rehash the oldies? And may I add,
doing a piss-poor job of it as well. No imagination, no talent. You can
have your reality shows,....fine by me. I\'ll stick to the oldies for the
time being, and yes, continue to listen to Mike Post and other various
artists who have given us some fine music in the past number of decades.

NAME ONE musician on earth who considers Mike Post as a role model or
inspiration. By musician I mean someone who actually plays an instrument and
who is has had a #1 hit recording, not another jingles monkey.

Well, I know that Jim Gordon from Derek & The Dominos, Carly Simons fame
played with Mike Post. No interview to claim that he thought that Mike
Post was an inspiration, but he is one of a number of players who have
collaborated with Mike.
>As far as Pete Townsend is concerned, what song, what album?

The album is titled Endless Wire and the song is appropriately called,
\"Mike Post Theme\". I think the title speaks for itself, huh? I think
that should be enough to qualify as Mike being an inspiration don\'t you?
Hey, we\'re talking about someone who is known for his TV theme music.
Think about it,....

Fair enough. If PT and a guy from Derek and the Dominoes likes Mike Post,
that is what I was talking about. It qualifies as high praise.

I myself am guilty of buying a couple of those compilations of TV themes, I
never checked, but the odds are that Mike Post was involved with at least
half of them. Too bad Post never actually tried his hand at something more
substantial. It is hard to put the theme from Hawaii 5-0 on a CD without
people thinking that you are weird (I did that).

I agree. Much like people (myself included) would have expected Hendrix
to be playing jazz music right now, had he been among us. I expected that
from Clapton, but apparently from what I\'ve seen lately, that is not about
to happen. Still though, you have to give credit where credit is due, Post
is great at feeling things out on screen.

Ditto. Hey, I can put a tape and/or CD together with music ranging from
Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass to Led Zeppelin. How wierd is that? I
guess it takes all kinds, and I\'m just one of them.

I've been out of town for 2 days since my post that started
this thread so I am joining back in a little late.

IMO Mike Post is the king of composing TV themes. He has a
track record of 30+ years of being tops in this field with Emmy and
Grammy awards. He has put out several albums. He has been
commercially very successful. Obviously, a lot of folks appreciate
his work. As with every artist, there are those who don't appreciate
his work. So be it.

As far as will anybody remember any of these "dumb jingles" a
100 years from now - well, there are very few artists that have
written music that will last that long. Perhaps a few Beach Boys
songs! :}
