For years, the story I've heard has been that James Garner killed The
Rockford Files. Garner reportedly abruptly ended production of the series
in the middle of the 1979-1980 season and checked into a hospital as a
result of the years of beatings, abuse and physical debilitation he
suffered as a result of the series' rigorous schedule and violent
scripts.
In going through some Garner-related articles in back issues of TV Guide,
I discovered in the December 13, 1986 cover story on "Promise," this
interview quote from Stephen Cannell:
"They called me to the set. Jimmy was sick. When I got there, he was in
his trailer. I knocked. He didn't answer, so I just walked in. Jim was
in the bathroom throwing up. 'Sorry, man,' he said, 'I can't shake this
flu.' I told him I wanted him to see a doctor. He refused. I said it
was dumb. Finally, he went to the Scripps Clinic. They told him that if
he did not rest for six months he would severely damage his physical
health. That's when I shut down Rockford for good."
So, there's a confession from a different suspect. It wasn't James Garner
who killed the Rockford Files: Stephen Cannell dunit.

All the best to all Rockford Files fans. I wanted to say I
got a kick out of that bit above about getting your very
own portable printing press.
That was the one thing of all Rockford's toys that I
CLUED IN ON in a big way and it actually led to an
avocation of 4 color process printing and then on
to Desktop Publishing and I now do two national
newspapers on a quarterly basis for non profits and
politico type groups as editor and publisher. BUT
the thing I get the kick out of the most STILL is making
IMPRESSIVE LOOKING business cards for friends and
family and having them professionally printed and boxed.
Ole Jim Rockford was way ahead of himself and the world
with that little gizmo, wasn't he?

Merry Christmas to all. Brian's gift ideas are good; especially since it
looks like Season 3 won't be here until late February (or let's hope it's
here by then).

Unless my eyes and brain deceive me, a current Wal-Mart ad features two
Rockford alumni:
Robert DoQui, SWAT commander from Trees, Bees and TT Flowers Part 2
and
James A. Watson, Jr., Arthur, Gandy's kid, from The Hammer of C Block.
