The problem with the article is that it is written by a leading atheist.
Now I have no problem with that (I think both his books should be mandatory
reading, but that's not gonna happen in this country!), but I recognize
that this by itself will prevent many moderate religious voters from
hearing his main message regarding her lack of qualifications and dangerous
over-confidence in herself and what she believes she knows ("I won't blink").
And I'm surprised that Newsweek ran it. Their offices will probably be
firebombed.

So now the excuse is not that Palin fired Monegan for taking an unauthorized
trip to Washington, D.C.; it was his reason for taking the trip. The "last
straw" was that the Alaska Public Safety Commisioner went to seek funding
for an "agressive anti-sexual-violence program" for Alaska, "which leads the
nation in reported forcible rape."
"When you receive permission to travel, it does not mean that you receive
blanket authorization to discuss or do whatever you would like on that
trip," [Randy Ruaro, a Palin aide] added.
I wonder what would have been an okay reason for approving the trip in the
first place?

Should've posted this days ago...
In case you haven't seen it... latest A. Quindlen (I virtually always agree

Hypocrisy is only bad when it is improperly used.

I never thought I would live long enough to see the day when the Republican
presidential candidate would cite membership in the PTA as evidence of
executive experience, when the far right would laud the full-time working
mothers of newborns, when social conservatives would stare down teenage
pregnancy and replace their pursed-lip accusations of promiscuity with
hosannas about choosing life.

What I love is how all of these uber-capitalist free-market anti-regulation
advocates in the administration, who have been pushing for privatization of
everything, are suddenly running around like fools, setting up government
takeovers of the tanking mortgage giants, government bridge loans,
government taking 80%% ownership of AIG, etc. Um, *government*? And dare
I mention that that's *taxpayer* money that they're using? Ownership by
The People? A bit Socialist, isn't it?
And one of the McClone spokesmouths was saying this morning, Regulation?
Of course we need Regulation! No one argues that we need Regulation! The
problem is that the Regulators have been asleep at the switch, haven't been
tending to business. ... EXCUSE ME???? This from a NeoCon???? I wonder,
at the beginning of the Bush admin, how many people were in the agencies
that regulate finance, and how many are left today? If it's anything like
the FDA, their ranks have been decimated, and most of the competent folk
have left, replaced by party hacks.

This is Your Nation on White Privilege
By Tim Wise
9/13/08
For those who still can't grasp the concept of white privilege, or who
are constantly looking for some easy-to-understand examples of it,
perhaps this list will help.
White privilege is when you can get pregnant at seventeen like Bristol
Palin and everyone is quick to insist that your life and that of your
family is a personal matter, and that no one has a right to judge you
or your parents, because "every family has challenges," even as black
and Latino families with similar "challenges" are regularly typified
as irresponsible, pathological and arbiters of social decay.
White privilege is when you can call yourself a "fuckin' redneck,"
like Bristol Palin's boyfriend does, and talk about how if anyone
messes with you, you'll "kick their fuckin' ass," and talk about how
you like to "shoot shit" for fun, and still be viewed as a
responsible, all-American boy (and a great son-in-law to be) rather
than a thug.
