Sleazy or not, the bottom line is that Jeff A. insisted on adding
lines from another song to "Stand By Me," and then AI had to pay to
get permission to use the other song. He cost them money without any
authorization. He must be an idiot. He's apparently been "guiding"
David's career since he was a child, so he certainly should be aware
of the fact that one pays to use a song....shame on him. It's not
that AI couldn't afford it - it's that it wasn't Jeff A.'s business to
do it without permission from AI.
