So, I had a longass train ride earlier, and actually listened to all of
Cook's album. And I was like 'How the hell did he do this?' Cause it's
just him. He did everything on it. All the bass, rhythm and lead guitars,
keyboard, backing and lead vocals, everything but the drums who he hired a
sessionist for.
Like physically, what is the process for a single, working alone artist to
do this? Where do you start? Vocals? Guitar? What's the process? I
couldn't figure out which piece would be the 'guiding' piece as it were,
which everything else could be built around and now I'm curious about how
the hell one would take on this sort of process.
I remember being vaguely curious when I learned Prince did that too back in
the day, but I didn't have anyone to ask then.

I assume that the song would be mostly worked out first, right?
If I were to get serious with one of my creations and record it, I'd probably
leave the drums to last and hire a creative drummer. I can't get over how cool
some of the things are that they do. I often try to imagine a song I'm hearing
without a drum track, and good drums really change a song.
