Emmys to honor reality hosts
Wed Apr 23, 2008 2:17am EDT
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Reality TV hosts will get their due
at this year's Emmys.
The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Board of Governors has voted
to create a new award category for outstanding host for a reality or
reality competition program.
The award will be presented during the 60th Primetime Emmy Awards,
which ABC will broadcast live on September 21 from the event's new
home at the Nokia Theatre. Nominations in all categories will be
announced on July 17.
"Reality television has become such an integral part of television and
our culture, so it only made sense for us to create this new highly
competitive category," academy chairman and CEO John Shaffner said.
According to the rules, those eligible for the new award will be the
proactive "master of ceremony" hosts, rather than reactive
participants or judges.

That would remove Trump from the running (not that he would be nominated
anyway). I wonder whether Tyra Banks and Heidi Klum are ineligible, though.
Some 'judges' do more than judge. Tyra, for example, does the voiceovers
that sum up the shows events, introduce segments, etc... as well as hosting
some of the phot shoots.
If Probst doesn't win, it will simply add to the proof that the Emmy awards
are a joke.

Not necessarily. We'd have to take a closer look at how the rules are
actually worded. "Reactive participants" could refer to the
contestants themselves after all and a "reactive judge" could refer to
someone who just simply offers an opinion or score. I think on some
shows there may be more than one person eligible: Tim Gunn and Heidi
Fleiss on Project Runway for example (although Heidi is incredibly
bland and emotionless on that show). Tyra Banks would be eligible for
America's Next Top Model and maybe a few of the other judges but not
Twiggy because nothing she does could be considered "hosting".
