With the season 13 debut of CBS' The Amazing Race looming just around the
corner (okay, Sept. 28), exec producer Bertram Van Munster slipped us a few
clues about the upcoming globetrot.

. The race takes 23 days, covers nearly 40,000 miles, spans five continents,
and features some far-flung locales never before seen on the show, including
Angkor Wat, Cambodia and La Paz, Bolivia.

. The youngest team is a tandem of two guys in their early 20s. "They're
made for television," Van Munster says. "They're supersmart - and they make
terrible mistakes." A pair of recent divorcees in their late 20s also vie
for the million-dollar prize. "They were left with some financial debt, so
they really have a motive to run around the world," he says. And once again,
expect a serving of granola - this time with a husband-wife squad of
60-something Oregon hippies. "They're the real thing," says Van Munster.
"They come right out of the '60s. To a lot of people, it looks almost like
they're from a different planet."

Well, the name of the city is not Angkor Wat. According to Wikipedia,
the name of the city is Angkor and Angkor Wat is a temple in in the
city of Angkor, Cambodia

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The main entrance to the temple proper, seen from the eastern end of
the Naga causeway.Angkor Wat (or Angkor Vat) (Khmer: អង្គរវត្ត), is a
temple at Angkor, Cambodia, built for King Suryavarman II in the early
12th century as his state temple and capital city.>

Maybe...hoping that clears it up for you!

It's a very famous building, though.

That's exactly what I thought. That is at least 5 days shorter than normal?
I didn't open the link so this might be a stupid question but how many teams
are there? It sounds like we are going to get an episode or two less than
normal. However, no non-elimination rounds would be good, especially if Phil
tells (told) them at the beginning of the race that this would be the case.
Having every team going full out every leg would be nice.

You're not very good with geography OR history if you've never heard of
Angkor Wat. Particularly since it's country is mentioned. Cambodia.

For a little bit of mythology thrown in, Angkor Wat was believed (and still
is by some) to have been built LONG ago and was originally thought to be the
"lost city" of Mu.

Angkor Wat really came well known internationally during the Korean War
(Cambodia and Korea share a border, but being good at geography, you
probably know that lol, but this is for anyone else reading)

To the credit of those who do not know the site, I suppose it's ok. I mean
if a movie's never been made about it, we Americans rarely look beyond our
own noses to see anything that may be important *grin*

Personally, I've been almost obsessed with the place for years.

I think though, that anyone not interested in history or the study of
ancient societies wouldn't know the place. I'm sure most Korean War vets are
familiar with it. (Particularly since the number 2 person in the Khmer Rouge
lived on the Korean/Cambodian border.

What does surprise me is that anyone interested in human rights wouldn't be
familiar with a lot of the Cambodian history. Particularly since it's by far
the country with the most unexploded land mines in the world. I believe the
current figures are about 2 million that have yet to be found or blown up.

LES!
