We don't know where the tasks were in relation to one another. You seem to
be assuming that the puzzle, which was 1/3 mile away, was en route to the
other task when it might have been in the other direction. So to check out
the puzzle might have added an extra 2/3 mile to their journey.

I wonder if you would be questioning their decision to go straight for the
physical task had they been two buff guys.
