Hardly arbitrary, the history of TAR speaks for itself.

Ian (TAR4) was pretty fit and made it into the top 3. Plus, the
"older" couple on TAR5 & TAR7 (the names escape me, but still...) were
pretty "fit" for their age and did okay, but niether made it into the
top 3. What one tends to forget are the differences between "fit" 55
year olds & "fit" 25 year olds, one of the most important is
endurance. Especially competing in a show that allows for little sleep
and being constantly on the move. Tyler 'n James (TAR10) are a pretty
good example of that. So were the "frat" boys from TAR9.

But that is rather beside the point, accepting your view of the show
as stated, then one should always bet against the "55+" set since TAR
does not allow any "fit" ones to compete.

I can think of two "alpha male" teams that did poorly over the entire
run of TAR (at least the American version). Brian 'n Greg (TAR7) and
the "Cho" boys (TAR10). Otherwise, "alpha male" teams won TAR 1, 2,
4, 9, & 10 and did not compete in TARs 5, 6, 11 & 12, leaving only
TAR3 (where the twins finished in fourth) & TAR7.

Again, TAR history speaks for itself.
