By Denise Martin, Special to The Times

NO one is searching for pirate's booty or competing with a dozen other women
for Mr. Right. There are no aspiring karaoke superstars and no one gets
fired.

In fact, since the inception of the Emmy Award for top reality competition
series four years ago, only one show has ever won -- for being more of a
National Geographic travelogue than today's typical cutthroat elimination
show.

CBS' 11-seasons-old "Amazing Race" sends its contestants globe-trotting in
hopes of winning a cool $1 million. Teams of two fly to faraway locales to
follow clues, complete stamina-testing and sometimes stomach-churning
challenges, and overcome roadblocks while attempting to be first to arrive
at the final destination. The series' most recent season sent competitors to
places ranging from Mozambique, where they had to set trained rats loose on
a hunt for land mines, to Hong Kong, where some had to duck out of the way
of real kung fu fighting.

I would love to see TAR win 5 times even though the last 2 seasons were not
up to snuff.

4 days to go...place your bets.

Yah or nay?

I think TAR will win. It's still a different kind of a show and it has the
respect that many reality shows don't have.

I'd be all for it ... not hyped at all ... a difficult challenge in
planning ... filming and editing ... and comes out as a great
product ... granted they over edit to create some excitement at
times ... but I forgive them easily for that ...

I do want to put in a plug for Top Chef ... The craft is shown
extremely well ... contestants are chosen for abilities ... side
stories happen and are not forced ... and the judging is done
objectively with emphasis about the contestants ... and not the egos
of the judges ...

I'd would not have guessed it would have even gotten noticed ... that
in itself is remarkable ... I'm rooting for it ... and if it beat out
TAR ... I'd be fine with that ...

Survivor and Big Brother are still around. I haven't watched shows
like The Bachelor, but expect that there is plenty of mean-spirited
and unsportsmanlike behavior dominating those shows. Certainly one
of the appealing things about TAR, for me, is that while you will
certainly see people behaving badly, that's not what the program
is _about_ (and TAR-Asia was almost universally populated by
Thoroughly Likeable People, IIRC).

Still, the 'inspirational' programs are much bigger than they have
been, and we'll see how much of a difference this makes.

On an emotional level, of course, I hope it's TAR.

But I'm not really qualified to make that call since I've never even
SEEN 5 minutes of the rest of the shows...probably combined. Although I
suppose that would be an indication of something.

Take care,
Rich

God bless the USA

Maybe because it's won since the inception of the "Best Reality"
category, despite the varying quality of seasons should make it a
favorite...assuming one bets on these things.
