But how/why would I believe that the teams didn't get by with a half-a**ed
job at the plane washing? We weren't shown a clean plane wing. Hearing the
judge say 'no' a couple of times in no way 'proves' that the teams had to do
it right before getting a pass.

Yes. I hated that task. The description should have scared anyone away
from wanting to do that task, but then the reality was that the goalie
didn't seem to be able to swim, much less block the ball.
