If these people can't read maps now, how are they going to run the
race?
Filling out the 13-page application wasn't enough. Simply making an
audition tape didn't cut it. Because best friends Marlynne Keefe and
Irene White are women of action, and when they try out for "The
Amazing Race," they don't just tell - they show.
The plan was simple: show up at the reality show's recent casting call
at Jackson Rancheria Casino, turn in their application and cross their
fingers.
What they got instead was an Amazing Race of their own.
After sweet-talking a Longs Drugs manager into opening the photo kiosk
early so they could develop their last-minute photo, they set out on
an ill-fated shortcut, only to blow out not one, but two tires on a
too-sharp turn.
Neither knows how to change a tire or read a map, so they were
especially grateful for the three passers-by who drove them to the
casino and who somehow talked the producers into letting them audition
despite the missed deadline.

I'm surprised at how poorly prepared some folks are for these reality
shows. Evidently they look upon it as an expense-paid vacation and
maybe a chance to further their nascent show biz careers.
On Survivor, we had contestants who applied to be on the show who didn't
know how to swim at the time (maybe they took a one-day beginner's
course just before the start of filming). We even had one woman, Eliza
Orlins, who clearly had a phobia about getting dirty. Why someone like
that would apply to be on Survivor is a mystery to me.

Did you happen to catch the comment from James that he indeed 'cannot swim'.
He mentioned something about expecting to be really good in the challenges
as long as they didn't have something like swimming.

Well, it wasn't really about 'getting dirty' (like Cerie? being scared of
leaves). Eliza was scared to jump on a pile of muddy pigs and try to carry
one.
