Illegal immigrant didn't cause fatal crash, lawyer says

CENTENNIAL — The woman driving the pickup in a triple fatality Sept. 4
in Aurora was at fault in the collision, said the attorney
representing the illegal immigrant charged with the deaths.

Criminal defense attorney Kallman Elinoff said Monday he believes
Patricia Guntharp, the driver of the Mazda pickup truck, crossed the
double yellow line and made an illegal left turn near the intersection
of South Havana Street and Mississippi Avenue, causing the crash that
took her life, that of her best friend and a 3-year-old boy.

Francis Hernandez, a Guatamalan native who had been arrested almost 20
times in the last five years, faces multiple felony charges in
connection with the crash.

"This kid (Hernandez) was in the far right lane and he wasn't
expecting this woman to scoot in front of him," Elinoff said.

Ryan O'Neal Busted in Meth Mess

There is no father/son bonding activity quite like being busted
together for methamphetamine.
Ryan O'Neal and son Redmond were booked on suspicion of narcotics
possession this morning.

Authorities said they were doing a probation search at the family's
Malibu home when they found Redmond O'Neal in possession of
methamphetamine and a vial of the drug was allegedly found in Ryan's
bedroom.

The father/son are being held on $10,000 bail.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — An all-white jury will judge O.J. Simpson and a co-
defendant on kidnapping and robbery charges after defense lawyers lost
a contentious courtroom battle to include two African-American women
on the panel.

District Attorney David Roger gave the judge what he called "race
neutral" reasons for removing the two with his peremptory challenges,
and defended the final makeup of the jury chosen late Thursday night,
saying that two of six alternate jurors are black.

Both of the women who were removed had strong religious views, and the
prosecutor said he thought one of them would be inclined to "forgive"
Simpson while the other said she was hesitant to send anyone to
prison.

Simpson's 1995 acquittal on murder charges came from a predominantly
black jury.

Clark County District Judge Jackie Glass said she saw no evidence of a
systematic exclusion of African-Americans. The current panel also is
made up of nine women and three men.

Mayor Pleads Guilty, States 'I Lied Under Oath'

DETROIT -- Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has resigned from his
position as Detroit Mayor.

In a letter sent to Gov. Jennifer Granholm early Thursday afternoon,
the mayor said his resignation will be effective Sept. 18, 2008.

This comes hours after Kilpatrick accepted a plea deal in a perjury
case and assault charges that forced an end to his tenure as the
city's mayor and will send him to jail.

Wayne County Circuit Court Judge David Groner resided over the court
case in which Kilpatrick agreed to plead guilty to two felony counts
of obstruction of justice by committing perjury.

Part of the plea agreement includes immediate resignation within 14
days; pay restitution of $1 million; and four months in jail. He is
also barred from running for public office for five years.

He will also have to hand over his law license and turn over his state
pension to the city of Detroit.
