Lately in the evening I've been sitting in the swing on the patio reading,
etc. and about dusk the mosquitos begin visiting me. Do any of those
repellent candles really work? What kind...just one to put on the patio
table...or the torch types? TIA

As the price of oil continues to rise, some are turning to God and
prayer for an answer to their financial troubles.
The Pray at the Pump Movement, founded by Rocky Twyman, has been
holding prayer vigils at gas stations across the country. On Monday,
Twyman decided to take his movement from Exxon and Shell stations
straight to the steps of the Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Washington,
D.C., hoping to encourage the oil-rich country to raise the amount of
barrels they release each day from 200,000 to 1.2 million.

A key compound in red wine known as resveratrol appears to protect
against many of the health ravages associated with growing old, new
animal research reveals.
[...] Daily consumption of the compound—also found in the skin of
grapes and the crust of peanuts and walnuts—broadly improved the
long-term quality of life of middle-aged mice, although most mice did
not end up living longer.
[...] the researchers now compared the health and life spans of
middle-age mice given either a standard diet or a calorie-restricted
diet, with or without high or low daily dosages of resveratrol.
De Cabo and his colleagues found that resveratrol had the same
positive impact on mouse livers, muscles, hearts and bones as calorie
restriction alone.
Regardless of dietary protocol, the general health and vigor of
mice on a long-term regimen (approximately one year) of resveratrol
improved overall, without apparent side effects. However, only mice
consuming resveratrol alongside a high-calorie diet were found to
actually live longer.

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal has signed legislation allowing public
school teachers to use “supplemental materials” in class when teaching
about evolution. This is necessary, the new laws says, to promote
“academic freedom.” After all, everyone knows evolution is
“controversial.”
What will these “supplemental materials” be like? It’s hard to say
because the law does not describe them. It does state, however, that
these materials are not supposed to promote religion. This was thrown
in as a sop to pinkos, rabble-rousers and other malcontents who
actually believe the Constitution should be obeyed even in Louisiana.
Louisiana, of course, has a long history of being on the cutting edge
of science. Weary of plain old evolution science, bold Louisiana
lawmakers in 1981 decided to supplement it with “creation science.” A
law required both to be taught side by side so that the kids could
decide which was true.

FAIRFIELD, Conn: A combative cat named Lewis who frightened the
neighbors and got his owner into legal trouble two years ago has done
so well under house arrest that the case has now been scratched.
A judge dismissed a reckless endangerment charge against Lewis's
owner, Ruth Cisero, on Thursday, concluding she had met terms of a
special probation for first-time offenders. Lewis is now an indoor
pet, allowed outside only in a cat carrier.
"Unlike most of us, Lewis has learned to live with his limitations,"
said Eugene Riccio, Cisero's attorney.
The scratch-happy black-and-white cat drew widespread attention in
2006 when Cisero opted for a trial on the criminal charge rather than
euthanize or declaw him. Some pet lovers even sported "Save Lewis"
shirts.
A lot has changed in two years, though.
'Neighborhood is safe'
Neighbor Maureen Bachtig, whose February 2006 encounter with a nasty
Lewis led to the criminal case, said Thursday she was satisfied with
the outcome.
"She gets to keep her cat and the neighborhood is safe," Bachtig said.
