Banana slugs. We have few earth worms up here. (Shallow soil, -40F, peat
dirt, and earth worms don't mix.) ...

Yes, let us assume that. Since hybrids produce more crop per acre,
and maximizing yield is the most important thing, you shouldn't be
screwing around with open pollinated until you need to.

Last week? In your worst case scenario, you should have had them in
the ground by the end of December or so. You ran out of food back in
mid February, remember? How many more months of starving before you
have a new crop to fill your belly?
