Well I do not stop by as often as I would like or as often as I have in the
past, but today I must stop by and make a post.
Today is a double special day. First 02/03/59 is known as 'The Day The
Music Died', the day Buddy Holly, Richie Valenz, and JR 'Big Bopper'
Richardson died in a plane crash in a frozen Iowa Corn field.
Second and more important for this group at 5:35pm this after noon I
celebrated the end of 12 years as an ex-smoker. I have now started into
my 13th year quit.
My story for those it may help since I don't tell it as often here
follows:
Feb 3 1995 smoked the last cigarette in my pack about 5:15pm. A bit later
a co-worked asked me to join her for a break and when I said I was out gave
me one of hers. I went with her and stubbed out that smoke at 5:35:35. It
was a very cold February Friday evening and since I didn't want to go
across to the mall to buy another pack I said to myself 'now might be a
good time to quit'. No planning, no prior thought, no aids, just now
might be a good time to quit.

Hey Ian!
Didn't know exactly why I decided to stop by tonight. Now I do.
They were the best of times....the worst of times, but come hell, high
water from your broken toilet, a whole lot of laughs and tears, a new
grandchild here and there, and here we are. A little fatter, a whole
lot wiser and richer and still here to tell about it. Well done!
Very glad to have met you, and to have travelled this road with you.
Way to go!
Biker Chick, still your caboose, and proud of it, after all these
years

Thanks for stopping by, Ian. Those twelve years of freedom are looking
good on you. All of us who follow in your footsteps are grateful to you
all who were there at the beginning and built an AS3 for us. Thank you!

Great post Ian. I certainly am glad you have been here all these years.
You are living proof that one can remain quit longterm. Thanks for
reminding all of us that it is possible. Congratulations.

And done so with style, grace, complete candor and the sort of class that
ought to serve as an example to us all. I very well remember my first days
here, over seven years ago, Ian. You were very active on a regular basis on
the newsgroup, and I remember thinking "Here's a guy who knows the drill;
he's a guy to watch, and a guy whom I should be asking my questions..."
I eventually asked if you thought it permissible for me to post a link to a
small web page I'd created, and your reply was something along the lines of
"If it has something to do with not smoking, I don't think anybody would
mind."
That was the real start of what eventually became http://www.quitbuddies.org
Thanks, Ian, for helping me find what would become my focus here, and
lending encouragement to the activity that allowed me to hang onto some
shred of (what passes, in my case... for) sanity, during the madness that is
quitting's early days.
I'm proud to know you, and damned glad you're still around these parts!
Jef.
