  Sunshine and water

Author: B

Hi,

After reading Randall's recent post, mentioning Vitamin D and if it helps or
not with psoriasis, and then saying that sunshine seems to be the key, a
question came up.

I have no doubt from my own experience that sunshine seems to help to clear
the psoriasis, but I'm really wondering if it's more a combination of
sunshine and ocean water (maybe the minerals) that helps to make a drastic
change, or just sunshine itself? Whenever I've gone down to the Caribbean,
it's always been a combination of being out in the ocean water and sun, and
whatever psoriasis is on my body at the time, seems to clear pretty darn
fast, even when I'm indulging in a few too many Caribbean drinks.

  Glutamine

Glutamine Depletion and Its Relationship to Inflammation and Cancer.
NF-kappaB
This essay is republished from our subscription blog in the public
interest.

Glutamine has long been known to be a life saving nutrient during
criticial illness, but until recently no one understood why.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/queryd.fcgi?db=pubmed&cmd=Retrieve&dopt=Abstract&list_uids...

Granted, glutamine is an important nitrogen source, but so are many
other amino acids. It is now clear that glutamine, in high doses, acts
as a stress signaling molecule which protects the body against shock
and protein denaturation. The MINIMUM therapeutic dose is 0.3 grams/
kilo (2.2 pounds) of body weight. A 150 pound person would need to
take 20 grams of glutamine a day in juice, 10 grams twice a day.

"A Wolf at the Table" by Augusten Burroughs
By Holly Silva
SPECIAL TO THE POST-DISPATCH
04/27/2008

Even the most ardent fans of Augusten Burroughs may be disappointed
that his newest book is yet another rehashing of his childhood. His
eccentric mother and alcoholic (P) father, however worthy of ink, were
given a thorough airing in "Running With Scissors," as a best-selling
memoir and a movie.

Burroughs' three other collections of nonfiction ("Dry," "Magical
Thinking" and "Possible Side Effects") feature or have cameos by his
spectacularly messed-up parents. For extra measure, Burroughs' brother
John Elder Robison recently published his own memoir, "Look Me in the
Eye," which cast further harsh light on the family.

What could "A Wolf at the Table" possibly tell any reader about this
family that she doesn't already know by heart?
