Being multiple doesn't necessarily imply being *completely* separate.
There can be some remains of connection, especially in more co-conscious
kinds of multiplicity.

I agree that what your housemates did was cruel and inconsiderate. I also
suspect they didn't see it as being nearly as important as you do. People
generally project their own characteristics onto other people, and if
something isn't a big deal to them, they think it isn't a big deal to others
as well. Also, to many, making fun of others is a normal style of
interaction, because they grew up with it, and practice it without thinking.
They will continue to do this until they either experience enough blowback
to change their minds, or somehow develop empathy. From what I have seen,
the second is not likely without the first having preceded it.
Having said all that, I've noticed that there are some people who truly
bring out the worst in others. I don't want to say that they invite abuse,
because they don't intend anything of the sort, but there is something about
them that greatly encourages it. I sometimes describe this as saying that
someone is wearing a "Kick Me" sign on his back. I've never been able to pin
down just what these people do that inspires this response in others, but
I've definitely felt it. I don't give in to that urge, but I do feel it, and
I always wonder why.
