Surgery

Having cancer surgery and surgeon says that I will not be able to
swallow orally for a while, am on 30mg MS Contin 3X/day.

Was wondering what they might sub with while I'm on a feeding tube?

Need to ask as I did not get an answer from the surgeon as to what
will be used.

I would suspect injectable Morphine. Or a liquid Opiate derivative
such as Methadone. Personally I would get this question squared away
ASAP. I would also "suspect" although I am not a Doc, that you are
going to need something stronger then what you normally take to help
compensate for the pain of the surgery, or is the surgery going "fix"
the root cause of your pain? You might also want to consider getting
yourself an Advocate who can deal with these types of issues when you
aren't at the 100 percentile.

Regardless, best of luck to you with your surgery.

I'm a CP patient so I have been on the MS Contin for a while. Right
now am also using morphine sul .5ml (think thats 10mg for the cancer
breakthrough pain) as needed. I don't know how much pain will have
after the surgery, but won't be able to talk for at least a couple of
days too since it's in the throat area (a laser type surgery will be
done if possible) with a trach tube after.

I kind of figure the surgeon doesn't know much about CP patients. I
will try to get a more definate answer asap too, surgery day is close
approaching.

Yup got all my papers done "in case".

Anyone have any ideas on which dept. or whoever I should get hold of
at the hospital for this issue?

In a hospital setting if the Surgeon has already not paid much
attention to inquires on the issue (which sounds like the case) the

I'd also get a magic marker & write "Perform Surgery Here". There was
a case of a poor guy going in for some type of surgery (don't remember
that detail), but he came out with a sex-change procedure. Think it
was around 2002 or something. Perhaps in Britain. Memory is a little
foggy today.

MS Contin comes in a liquid that can go through the tube as long as
you flush it well.

It also comes in suppository form.
