Yeah, that was the early speculation. Then we started getting reports
about Matt Damon or Ben Affleck being approached to play Kirk, both of
whom are much too old to be portraying an Academy cadet...

Most of the cast of 90210 were way too old to be teenagers also :)

I didn't watch the show, but if 90210 portrayed teenagers naked or
having sex, then Hollywood had to cast older actors to play them.
Hollywood codes for mainstream TV shows have banned using young actors
to play such scenes.

If they're going to start mucking about in the established Kirk era,
then they're really gonna face troubles with many fans and it was
already going to be a silly "reboot", ie. do whatever the hell we want
and sod the fans and established storylines.

Maybe it won't be a silly reboot. My hope is that, just once, the
established TOS canon and faithful fan's wishes will actually be
respected, for once.

What's the likelihood of that? Probably about -500%%. Some idiot at the
top has almost certainly seen the success of the new "Battlestar
Galactica" and will want to clone that idea and create a new "Star
Trek" that's almost nothing like the original. :-(
