"Yesteryear" *was* officially made canon by Okuda. It's the only TAS
episode to be "canonized."
As a result, other elements of that episode have appeared in subsequent
Trek productions. In fact, in the "remastered" TOS episode "Amok Time,"
the scenes of Vulcan were altered to be consistent with what was shown
in "Yesteryear."
If I'm right, however, this scene in Trek XI would be a duplicate
(ripoff?) of the same scene from "Yesteryear," only performed in live
action this time.
